Hey all,

Could you guys fill me in on the storylines and programs that were going on in Stampede in '84, preferrably later in the year?

I have results up until about September, but it's just the matches, and I'm curious about what was going on to set those matches up.

Thanks.

Some of the storylines that stood out for me (I might be getting some of the details wrong):

The year began with Stomper Gouldie as the face North American champion, having defeated Bad News Allen in Dec 83.   Gouldie feuded with Kerry Brown a bit, and then lost to the promotion's new monster heel, Killer Khan.   Gouldie lost a loser-leave-town match, but then returned about two weeks later as the masked 'Bounty Hunter.'  Before the Midnight Rider-like storyline could really get underway, Gouldie/Hunter left Stampede (apparently angry about payoffs).

Week after week, Khan (managed by KY Wakamatsu) demolished various faces.  It all built to a feud between Khan and Dynamite Kid, who had recently returned from a stint in Portland.   They had three matches in the Calgary Pavilion.  The first had a screw job finish, and for the rematch, DK put his career on the line.   He lost that match by countout,  but Stu Hart intervened and said DK could have one more match against Khan.   DK won the match and the title.

Shortly afterwards, Bad News Allen returned (having vanished after losing to Gouldie).   He took the NA title from Dynamite, but that was just the beginning of this new stage of their feud.   They shot an angle where DK's very pregnant wife was in the ring receiving flowers from the promotion.   Bad News came to the ring and brutalized Dynamite (who did a blade job), while Wakamatsu restrained DK's wife.   Another 'shock' angle.

DK and Bad News continued their feud (including a famous cage match in Vancouver).  The feud spun off into tag matches, with DK and Davey Boy wrestling Bad News and the Cuban Assassin.    At the end of a multi-week and much-hyped tag tournament, the future Bulldogs defeated News and Cuban and were awarded the tag title.

'Big' John Quinn soon became part of the main event feud.   He returned to Stampede as part of Wakamatsu's stable, teaming with Bad News.   But Quinn acted like a face even when teaming with the heels and eventually turned on his manager.    Thus by spring,  Bad News was feuding with DK and with Quinn.   At this point, Bret Hart returned to feud with Bad News, only to be sidelined with a legit (and serious) knee injury.

As summer began, Davey Boy took Bret's spot as the lead face.   He had a memorable 'beard vs. hair' match with Bad News.   To the shock of most Stampede viewers, one epi began with the announcement that Davey Boy had won the title from News a few days before at a Regina house show.    For the final two months or so of the promotion,  Bad News fought to regain the NA title, and with Kerry Brown and Ron Starr, feuded with Davey, Dynamite, and a returning Bret.    I believe DK and Ron Starr had a series of chain matches after several pre- and post-match brawls.

Overall, some good angles/storylines.  However, much of it (specifically, DK vs. Bad News and Bret vs. Bad News) was a rerun of the previous year's angles.    By mid-year, the promotion really needed some new main event heels to battle Dynamite and Bret.
