Al Snow once said in an interview that the best match of wm 3 was Hogan vs Andre because that's what drew the big crowd and money. Most people say it was Savage vs Steamboat that was the best match and in terms of in-ring quality it was, but the match that people paid to see was Hogan vs Andre so that was really the best match.
Do you agree with this? I say he has a point. If Savage vs Steamboat headlined wm 3, I don't think it would have drawn more than 20,000 tbh.

No, I don't agree.
I've said this on this board numerous times: when it comes to professional wrestling, I am a buyer (a mark) and not a seller (worker/promoter).
As a buyer, there is no reason on earth why I should accept the seller's terms as to who and what is good, better or best. I'll employ my own criteria and my own judgment, and arrive at my own conclusions, thank you very much.
Oftentimes the match that draws the marks is not the match that wows the marks. As a career undercard worker of some ability, Mr. Snow should realize that.

To give credit to Vince, much like he had done again in the late 90's, the whole crowd was into each and every match on the card.
The WWF staff led by Vince and Patterson built the card so perfectly and almost flawlessly.
I mention the late 90's as I had been to house shows and seen the PPV's where the fans just ate up the first match as much as all the rest.

Snow has some borderline-nonsensical ideas as to what constitutes a card--things about there only being one "pop" and other stuff that I can barely comprehend, much less explain.
Mark Smart's response is an absolutely perfect one to those who evaluate anything and everything in wrestling solely by how much money it drew. Until someone starts cutting us checks, then those matters are best left to the accountants.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Snow talking about it from a wrestler's perspective, not a fan's? In that, a wrestler's goal in his matches should be to try make fans want to start/continue to spend money to see him again rather than appealing to the "workrate" crowd. Basically, a wrestler should consider his matches good if people are wanting and paying to see them rather than based on star ratings.

Yes Snow's comment was taken a bit out of context. I recall hearing him make that comment before.
In some ways I do agree with Snow. Here's why, I was about 12 years old when Mania 3 took place and I remember vividly the next day at school everyone was talking about Hogan/Andre. So I guess it depends on your prospective?
As I got older I started really becoming a big fan of the Steamboat/Savage match. Even going so far as to memorize it.

Maybe a matter of semantics? You could never convince me the Hulk vs Andre wasn't the "biggest" match on that show before and after it happened. When you say "best" though that's different ... because Steamboat-Savage was clearly the "better" match. Like Batman is the biggest movie of the Summer but not the best.

Whatever ... was it? I'm looking forward to seeing the Avengers on DVD more than Batman. I only go to the movies with my 4 yr old daughter so I've seen Ice Age, Journey 2, and Winnie the Pooh in the last year.

Andre- Hogan was the main draw for sure and my friends barely talked about steamboat-savage. Anybody who says that Steamboat-Savage over shadowed Andre-Hogan is just trying to rewrite histor

I totally agree with what Al Snow said. It was the best match on the card. He has a good reason to say it too. His point was what drew the fans to the building that day. What sold the tickets. It was Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant. From a technical standpoint yes Savage vs. Steamboat was the best match. However the match that put the most butts in the seats was the Hogan vs. Andre match. That was the match that most fans wanted to see. If I could have seen it on PPV or gone to Closed Circuit t.v. then I darn sure would have mainly wanted to see that match. The rest of the matches were the meat and potato's of the card. There were fans who did want to see Steamboat finally give Savage what he had coming to him but I would venture to guess that 9-10 of those fans that were in attendance that day were there to see Hogan vs. Andre. I agree with wcw said if Savage vs. Steamboat was the headliner then it would have only sold 20,000 seats tops. Vince would have really lost his shirt if that had been the Main Event.

I understand his point, as it has been explained by several posters on this thread. His point is either (a) wrong or (b) badly expressed.
To judge by several of the recent comments on this thread, Hogan versus Andre was already the best match on the card before it was ever performed. After all, the tickets had already been sold. The crowd had already assembled. Fannies were in seats. The actual match itself, as performed by its protagonists, was irrelevant. Sure, Hulk and Andre put forth the effort and did what they could, but they really didn't need to have bothered. Their match was already the "best".
Now, doesn't that sound ludicrous to you? It does to me. We need to find ways of expressing ideas in direct language that does not confuse the issue. If all we're doing is reaffirming that Hogan versus the Giant was the main event of WMIII, promoted as such and publicly accepted as such . . . well, who doesn't already know that? That's Mr. Snow's "business" insight? To call it the "best" simply because it was the main event is to conflate and confuse two ideas that are separate and distinct, and that should be kept that way.
