Brown was a mainstay in the Maritimes for several summers.  He mostly wrestled in Tag Team action holding the Tag Titles with several different partners.  From Dr. Hito, Mr. Pogo, Tokyo Chono (Masahiro Chono), etc... Can't forget teaming with his nephew Kerry Brown (Known as Rick Valentine in the Maritimes)

One of the best heels in the business.  He knew how to get a crowd going, and he was excellent at his job.

Bob told me a great story about the maritimes one night after a few beers. He said that he was staying in a hotel next to the arena in St. John and that a group of people had come over to the hotel after the show to wait for the guys to arrive. When Brown got there, this old guy started on him. Brown told me that he had a starter's gun in his bag and for a rib pulled it out and fired it at the guy. Well apparently the guy faints but everybody else thinks he has been shot and calls the police.
I guess they put the good Bulldog in the slammer for the night until he could convince them it was all a big rib, lol.

Hey Dan,

The old folks of the Maritimes, would of done anything to get Bob Brown in Trouble.  They despised him so much, that it was scary.

I remember once at the Cocagne Arena.  Bulldog was wrestling Mike Lozansky.  Their's this old man at ringside, that right through the match was on Browns case.

Anyway, halfway through the match.  Bulldog just looks at him and tells him, what are you going to do to me.  The Old man takes his cane, and walks up to the ring, and takes a swing a the Bulldog.   Of course he missed him about half a mile.  Security came quickly and sat the old man down.

After the match.  The old man starts after Bob, and Bob quickly retreats to the dressing room.  For the remainder of the card, the old man kept screaming that Brown was scared of him.  Everybody in the arena was laughing so hard, that in the Main Event, I think it was Leo Burke against Rip Rogers.  Brown comes out, and interferes.  There's this 20 year old idiot, that takes a chair and hits Brown in the back with it.  Well, you can imagine what happen's next.  Brown starts after him, so does Rip Rogers.  Bobby Bass is standing in the dressing aisle, and looks at me, and says tell me when.  (I always sat near the heels dressing room and talked with them during the matches.  Well, I tell Bass, when and he clothesline the fan.

Well let's just say, that the end result was a major brawl mostly between the fans, and the heels.  Several security guards got injured, and that fan got some charges laid against him.  But Bulldog, Rogers and Bass where not injured, but they did get their shares of puches.

One thing was for sure, when Bulldog Bob Brown was in an arena in Cocagne, a riot was almost certain to erupt.

God I missed these days, when wrestling was still kayfabe, to the fans.

Sniper,

If you are in Halifax or ever travel up this way stop into the public archives on University Avenue just down from Dalhousie University.

Go to the chronichle herald newspaper archives and you will see that Bulldog Bob Brown was wrestling in the maritimes as early as the late sixties. In fact I think he just missed by a season or two famous world known grapplers in Bulldog Brower and Wild Bull Curry who were mainstays in the maritimes through the sixties.

Those two had a feud that carried on in the maritimes well over 5 years. The period you mention I believe is the eighties and early nighties and although I think Brown could hold his own he was past his prime by then and wrestled in a lot of Tag matches with the wrestlers you mentioned above.

I used to talk to him after the matches and he seemed to be an okay guy. He also created a riot in the Halifax Forum one night when he spit in an old ladies face and some lunatic fans seated at ringside started throwing chairs and stuff at him. If my memory is correct it was the late Bullwip Dan Johnson and Vic Rossitanni who came to his aid that night.

They roughed a few of the fans up and that was it. The police arrived and restored law and order and the show went on. The wrestlers didn't get charged but the fans got throiwn out of the building.

Speaking of Halifax there was an old lady there who used to come after me all the time. I loved it and worked her up every week. I would go right towards her every week when I would come to the ring.
So one night I'm by the dressing room and she is in the area there. She tells me that she has got something special for me tonight. So I grab Kerry Brown and we go over to see her. She opens her purse and she has an actual brick in it. She tells me that she is going to knock me out tonight, lol.
I loved that lady. . .

The Grande Finale for tonight should prove really different.  Top contenders for the Tag Team Championship Rugged Bobo Brown and partner Bad Bill Kochen may get more than they bargained for in the new team of Bobby Jones and Dave ATiny@ Burnett.  Some of you fans may recall, several years ago, when Burnett and Jones were a much feared tag team.  After a sincere effort to make an honourable comeback Burnett, as of late, has reverted to his old true form.  AI=m tired of being rassed, booed, and pushed around trying to impress my fans by fighting according to the book@, says Tiny. Bulldog disqualified
(Vancouver Province; Aug 28, 1970)
By: Terence Ross

As far as Bulldog Brown is concerned, he has been muzzled.  Brown, the more colorful half of the team that holds the Canadian tag team wrestling championship, has been suspended by the Vancouver Athletic Commission.  He is not allowed to wrestle in Vancouver until further notice.
Wrestling promoter Sandor Kovacs was told of the suspension in a telegram signed by Ben Morly, secretary-treasurer of the commission.  Aghast, Kovacs also yelled, Afoul!@
ABrown is my biggest drawing card,@ said Kovacs.  AWhat are they trying to do?
AThere is nothing in the telegram that warrants a suspension,@ said Kovacs.
The telegram said the suspension Aresulted from an incident at Kerrisdale Arena, Monday, August 24...@
Brown was suspended Apending a review of the situation and decision of the commission.@
The Aincident@ was not described and Morly refused to go into details Thursday when aksed to elaborate.
Brown, however, was not so reticient.
AI punched one of the fans,@ said Brown. AI gave him a black eye.@
Brown, known to his more intimate friends as Robert, insisted that he acted under severe provocation, if not exactly in self-defence.
On the way to the dressing room, after he and partner Johnny Quinn had once again successfully defended their title, a male fan jabbed Brown with the lighted end of his cigar, said Kovacs.  Brown reacted instantly and decisively.
AThe guy was going to sue, or press charges, or something,@ said Brown.  ABut he later admitted he was in the wrong, and as far as I was concerned, that was that.  Then the telegram!@
Kovacs said Thursday he intends to appeal the suspension.  He has retained lawyer John Drysdale to act on behalf of himself and Brown.
AI=d like to bring this thing to a head,@ said Kovacs.
The Athletic Commission has five members, all unpaid.  Ald. Ed Sweeney is the city council representative on the commission, which meets irregularly, but usually once a month.
Morly said he has received no official notification that either Kovacs or Brown wants to appeal.
AHe definitely will,@ said Kovacs.  ABy telegram, the same way he informed us.@
But the likelihood of Brown being reinstated in time for next Monday=s wrestling card is seriously in doubt.  The first fall, it appears, has been won by the commission.

Showdown coming?
(Vancouver Province; Aug 29, 1970)
They call him Bulldog because he=s stubborn.
And that=s why the tenacious 245-pound wrestler say he=s going to ignore his recent suspension by the Vancouver Athletic Commission and wrestle on Monday=s card at Kerrisdale Arena.
AI=m going to wrestle Monday regardless,@ Brown insisted Thursday.  AI=m going to find out just how much power they (the Commission) have.@
The exact reason for Brown=s suspension has not yet been released by the VAC, although Bulldog does admit that he Apunched one of the fans@ following a match at Kerrisdale Arena on Monday.  Brown contends he was provoked, because a fan jabbed him with the lighted end of a cigar.

However, there was some suggestion Thursday that Brown may have struck the wrong man.  Art Ritchie, who told The Province he was the victim of Brown=s brutal blow, claimed that not only was he not the one to make a human ashtray out of the Bulldog, but that he doesn=t even smoke cigars.
AI didn=t do it,@ said Ritchie, ABrown=s action may have been an accident, but I=m not going to take a broken nose, broken cheekbone and black eye for nothing.  I=ve retained a lawyer.@
Meanwhile Brown=s lawyer, John Drysdale, served notice of appeal of the suspension Thursday with the City Clerk=s office.  The appeal is to be heard by City Council during its Tuesday meeting.  (Under the VAC=s by-laws only City Council can lift suspensions).
Wrestling promoter Sandor Kovacs was asked about Brown=s plan to defy the suspension, by wrestling Monday.
Said Kovacs: AIf he wants to wrestle, then I can=t disappoint the fans.@

Picture of a hurt athlete
(Vancouver Province; Sept 1, 1970)
By: Terence Ross
Dejected, but as unrepentant as ever, Bulldog Brown returned to his dressing room Monday night, complying with an order of the Vancouver Athletic Commission that suspended his wrestling privileges.  Brown had earlier announced that he would defy the order, but reconsidered on advice of his lawyer, John Drysdale.
AIf it weren=t for Drysdale and Sandor, I=d be in there,@ said Brown.  AI=m willing to take on the Commission.@
(Sandor Kovacs is the promoter of the weekly wrestling matches in Vancouver and his licence would have been in jeopardy if he had permitted Brown to take his place in the ring at Kerrisdale Arena.)
The suspension will be appealed to City Council today.  The hearing will be closed to the public, and will be held in the mayor=s office at 11 a.m. with Brown, Drysdale and Kovacs in attendance.
Drysdale Monday termed the suspension Aa denial of natural justice@.  A man should not be deprived of his means of livelihood without a fair hearing.@
He had asked the Commission to lift the suspension, which was temporary and indefinite, until a hearing could be held.  The Commission refused.
Brown=s battles with the commission began after his arrival in Vancouver 17 months ago.  In that time, said Brown, he has been fined 10 times B amounts ranging from $25 to $100.
AI=ve tried to appeal, but was told I couldn=t.  And what happens to the money?@
Drysdale said that under the bylaw setting up the Commission, there is provision for fines and suspension.  But a hearing is required in each case.  ANowhere is there provision for a temporary suspension.@
Brown readily admits he punched a fan the previous week when attacked while returning to his dressing room.  He has reminders of that incident B a hole where a front tooth use to be, knocked out by a flying chair, and a burn on his back where he was jabbed by a lighted cigar.  It was the sudden pain of the burn that caused him to react with a looping left fist.
In attendance at Monday=s matches: Ald. Ed Sweeney, council representative on the Commission, and Ben Morly, the commission secretary-treasurer.

Bulldog unleashed
(Vancouver Province; Sept 3, 1970)

Wrestler Bulldog Brown has been forgiven by the Vancouver Athletic Commission and he will be allowed to return to the ring for his scheduled bout on Monday at Kerrisdale Arena.
Brown was suspended indefinitely and without hearing by the commission following an incident outside the ring at the arena on Aug. 24.  An appeal to city council by his lawyer, John Drysdale, got Brown a hearing by the commission.
The decision to reinstate Brown was unanimous, the commission ruling that he acted under Aserious provocation@ when he hit a fan after being burned on the back with a cigar.  There was no doubt at the hearing, however, that Brown=s fist found the right mark.
In connection with the ruling, the commission issued a warning to the world that it would Anot condone misconduct by any professional athlete.@

You could add the 4/20/86 match in Minneapolis where he lost to Giant Baba to the records (Wrestlerock 86).  If I discover any results from his Central States run that aren't listed, I will include them on other posts.

Bulldog Bob Brown worked as a referee when WWF did their 1992 shows in Saskatchewan when Bret Hart won his first WWF World heavyweight title from Ric Flair.  I can't remember who was wrestling when Brown was the referee, but when he'd go down to make the count, one slap against the mat ended up being like two for Brown.  Bobby Heenan called him a moron in commentary because of it.

Can't forget teaming with his nephew Kerry Brown

Back in the very early 70s when Brown wrestling for the Vancouver promotion, I saw him get a pocket knife pulled on him by an elderly guy.
This took place in Bellingham WA at the Assumption Gym (they had Thursday night shows about once a month).
Brown had been thrown out in a battle royal (I can't recall who won...mighta been Steven Little Bear) & Brown went back in the ring to attack the face wrestler. The old guy flipped out & went to the ring apron with the knife. Bob saw him & kicked him hard in the chest. Then he got on the mic & yelled that he wanted the guy arrested or he was gonna call the chief of police. I was just a few feet away from all this (I was about 13 or so back then). Scared the hell out of me.
My dad picked us up and, as we got in the car, we saw a few policemen talking to the old guy outside the building.
