The "why wasn't Sting able to carry the ball thread" got me thinking. A lot of the booking for '89 was affected by the loss of AA, Tully,, Barry Windham,, JJ Dillon and Dusty Rhodes.  So what would 1989 have looked like if the Horsemen and Dusty didn't leave?  Despite the big losses '89 turned out to be a great year for WC W but how would it have looked with the Horsemen staying put.  I'll throw my ideas out there.

WORLD CHAMPION Ric Flair
His program with Steamboat still goes as it played out in '89. Instead of breaking Gilbert's nose. Arn, Tully, and Flair breaks Sting's during a TB/ AAvsSting,/Luger tag team match prompting a Flair/Blanchard/Anderson vs. Sting/Luger/mystery partner match where Steamboat enters the scene.

US Champion Barry Windham
Feuds most of the year with new comer Brian Pillman.  Jim Ross during BP matches keeps remarking on how he reminds him of Barry Windham when Windham first joined the company.  Windham feels the need to welcome BP to WCW with a beat down and a lesson on what it means to be a champion.

Tag Team champions Arn and Tully
They feud and eventually drop the TT straps to Luger and Sting.

TV Champion Mike Rotunda
Still feuds with Steiner. I don;t team him up with Dr. Death. I leave him as a singles wrestler and Captain of the Varsity Club.  I'd make Steiner's title reign at least 6 months long.

US Tag Team Champs Midnight Express
The Freebirds reform with Garvin and use the Freebird rule to win the titles. The MX recruit Eddie Gilbert to help battle with  Hayes/Gordy/Garvin

Other feuds:
Dusty Rhodes/Kevin Sullivan (a long series of cage matches)
Dr. Death/ Ron Simmons  Simmons refuses invitation to join Varsity Club.
Road Warriors/Skyscrapers  Long program with series of back and forth wins.
JYD/Butch Reed  Reed is associated with Teddy Long and the Skyscrapers.

Additionally Terry Funk will enter and feud with Rhodes.  Gary Hart will enter with the Great Muta to feud with former champ Steamboat.  SST  come in and attack Road Warriors.  Sting gets the nod next to take on Flair. Windham and Luger battle for the US title.  Diamond Dallas Page enter WCW with Badd Company to challenge MX for US Tag Titles.  Skyscrapers fire Long and hire Ole Anderson to manage them against Arn/Tully for Tag Team gold.

Awesome that would be for 1989 NWA but the fans were burned out by Rhodes in the company and the 4 Horsemen concept was stale and needed some time to rest and try new things to compete with the WWF that year.

I would push Gilbert, Simmons, and Williams.   The Horseman would be on the downlow.

Interesting how everyone always seems to think that Arn and Tully leaving crippled the company but everyone who responded seems to think the Horsemen had already ran the course. I'm actually guilty of thinking that myself while rebooking '89.  By '90 what do you do with them? My '90 would have been:

World Champion Sting with Flair challenging to win it back.
Muta as US champ vs. Steamboat.
Arn as TV champ feuding with former tt partner Tully Blanchard (fired from Horsemen) with Blanchard and Dusty forming an occasional tt.
Tag Champs Road Warriors feuding with new Horesemen team of Windham/Luger.

I guess maybe things worked out best for WCW the way it went.

I am thinking that the best way to keep the Horsemen powerful and relevant would be to ensure that they were truly dominant. With the roster we have in '89-90, there are a lot of OTHER heels that deserve(d) push...Muta, Funk, Skyscrapers, Doom, MX, etc.

So how do we book the Horsemen in this reality?
I am thinking that the quasi-face turn and the feud with J-Tex would STILL keep them hot...but then you are sacrificing Steamboat, Sting, and other hot faces.

A dimemma indeed!
But "face" Horsemen fending off J-Tex, Skyscrapers and the Varsity Club definitely has more appeal than 2 more years of them facing off against Sting and Dusty....

I still like the idea of in '89 (It would've been fresh) having Tully turn on the Horsemen, and join J-Tex.  When someone left the Horsemen (Until '97) the Horsemen always turned on THEM.  This way you get a disgruntled Tully (Over not even receiving a World Title shot) leaving the Horseman.  Maybe you bring in Ricky Steamboat or Eddie Gilbert as the 4th Horseman to fill Tully's spot.

I think the NWA was in need of a makeover at that point.  And part of that was Tully & Arn leaving, the Horsemen concept dying, Dusty out, all of which led to Flair having one of the greatest years of his career in 1989.

Minus all the nonsense that Jim Herd put out there like the Ding Dongs and Norman the Lunatic, other things worked out pretty well.  The Steiner's emerged, Flair had incredible feuds with Steamboat and Funk...

Bring Tully and Arn back in to the fold together at the end of '89, now that would've been fun.
