A mainstay at the top of wrestling cards across the land from the mid-'30s to the mid-'50s, after which he was sent to prison following the murder of his wife, Nanjo Singh came back to wrestling in the late summer and fall of 1966, resuming an old, old feud with Whipper Billy Watson (he and Watson had swapped the British Empire title back and forth during the early WWII years). At the time, 1966, Nanjo aligned himself with younger stars Tiger Jeet and Mohan Singh.

My questions: What happened to Nanjo Singh after this flurry of activity (most of the bouts were very short, given Singh's age and, I imagine, a good deal of rust from nearly a decade of inactivity due to the prison stretch)?

Were Tiger Jeet Singh and/or Mohan Singh actual relatives?

Well I'm not someone in the know -- Nanjo seemed to vanish in the late 60s and I don't think I ever saw an obituary for him. Jim Proudfoot might have mentioned his death in the Toronto Star, but like the Sheik, his passing went almost unnoticed in the city where he was once such a popular star.

He wasn't related to Tiger Jeet Singh. And Tiger wasn't related to Mohan. I don't know if Nanjo and Mohan were related. I believe that Nanjo's real last name was something long and complicated.

You don't have to look to Detroit to find Nanjo being attacked by fans. It happened repeatedly in Toronto. Nanjo was the man responsible for the ramp at Maple Leaf Gardens. It was needed to keep him away from angry spectators.

Post: #20519 PT: #5/9	The ramp made its debut on June 3, 1948. Joe Perlove of the Toronto Star wrote a long story about it the next day. In true Perlovian style, he doesn't get around to mentioning the undercard or the fact that Watson regained the British Empire title, but -- also typical of Perlove -- you can learn more from his stories than the more fact-oriented pieces that usually ran in the Globe.
