Took a couple boxs out to the garage today and ended up bring more back in the house that I took out.
In other boxes, I found a bunch of old CAC programs & newsletters from the 1980’s. This was before I joined around 1991, and I remember buying them from Art Abrams for a small price. I’m going to go thru them, because most of these people are no longer around & it seems to be lost history. So this is what I found:
1984 CAC Banquet Program
March 11, 1984
Valley Hilton Hotel, Sherman Oaks, Calif.
The cover looked the same as all the ones that follow but it was just a cardboard front & back and not much more. So just four pages. The people honored was Archie Moore, Al Baffert (one of the early leaders of the cub & not talked about today) and Harvey Parry. Parry wrote his own bio on page 3. He was a champion diver (won National divers title at the 1915 San Francisco World’s Fair & missed making the Olympic in 1912 by 4 points), and boxer. James J. Corbert got him a job with the movie studios and he worked for 60 years as a trainer & stuntman. Train Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Clark Gable. At 5’6” he also doubled for women stars.
CAC Newsletter
Sept 1985
There used to be club meeting at the Old Spaghetti Factory (5939 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood) every Wedesday and some of the events had special guests. On Aug.21, 1985 they honor Lord James Blears, who flew in from Hawaii. Some of the 100 members present were Baron Michele Leone, Dave Levin, Toru Tanaka, “Red Shoes “ Dugan, Mae Young, Karl Lauer, Red Bastien, Mike Mazurki, Vic Christy, & all the LA members.
With this issue Sept. 1985, Mike Mazurki’s Ear became an offical trademark of the club.
Their was a photo of Olympic Champion Paul Gonzales receiving an honor from the club & Mazurki.
Their was a clipping by Scott Ostler from the L.A. Times covering the meeting & Blears. KABC-7 TV also covered the meeting. There also was a photo of Beyer surfing in Hawaii with his mask on.
New members were: Mildred Burke, Dick Beyer, Red Bastien, Sandor Kovcs, Baron Leone, Lee Marshall, & Mae Young…so this when the club was becoming a big deal. The next Banquet was announced for March 15, 1986 at the Sportsmen’s Lodge. People to be honored were Richard Sandoval, Vincent Barbi, Monty Monaghan, Leo Patykula and an unannounced movie actor.
1986 CAC Reunion Banquet Program
March 15, 1986
Sportsman Lodge
Members honored were Vic Christy, Lord James Blears, Paul Gonzales, Al Stankie, Cesar Romero, Monty Monaghan, Vince Barbi, & Leo Patykula.
Master of Ceremonies was Pat Buttram.
Not much else to the program. No bios. Had a full page add from the WWF and one from Kathryn Etienne. This was a 90 year old ballet dancer who ran a dance school in Hollywood. At one time or another she had taught Mitzi Gaynor, Virginia Mayo & Gale Storm. She was a big supporter of the CAC and always sat near the entrance when you got to each dinner…until they left Studio City…or she died…I don’t remember what came first. I think they called her the Queen of Hollywood. She must have been famous at one time.

“Classy Freddie Blassie received his CAC plaque and of cource had quite a few words to say about it. Freddie made himself the star of the evening in words and action. Among his many former opponents and friends in the crowd, Freddie was not bashful, but did mellow somewhat to offer his sincere thanks and compliments on the success on the CAC banquet.”

Hans Shultz who retire from wrestling in 1970 and then worked as a Dodger Stadium guard died on Aug. 27. He donated hie rare wrestling photo collection to the club. The newsletter had 7 pages of photos from the 30’s to the 50’s. I think they are the photos on display at every CAC reunion.
At a recent Wednesday meeting the guest of honor was Billy Robinson.
New members: Angelo Savoldi, Joe Gold (Gold’s gym), Ken Mantell (Ken Lusk), David Wolf, Bob Orton Sr, Don Luce, Billy “Red” Lyons (William Snip), Pepper Gomez, Gerry Monti, Alexis Arguello, Trevor Berbick, Beau Jack, Chris Dundee, Marty Cohen….Membership was said to be at 970.
Yohe: It looks like the CAC had every major boxing person in America in the club. In the 90’s, the Sportsman Lodge would split the room in half. Boxing took 50% of the room. How did the club tell all this important sportsmen that they were no longer welcome after moving to Las Vegas. They just dumped on the boxing part of the club.
1989 CAC Banquet Program

Yohe: Danny Lopez’s twin brother was a patient in my hospital for years. I don’t remember what happened to the brother, but he was unresponsive. Danny Lopez every night, after work, came to visit and sit beside his brother. This went on for years. I talked to him a lot & he told me he had been honored by the CAC. All the nurses, who didn’t know who he was, loved the guy. Wonderful man.
