I agree. Although to be fair, Jimmy Garvin had a solid amatuer wrestling background.

Yeah, DSG, after I posted that I remembered that he had been a pretty scientific guy in his babyface days in FL in the late 70's..but as the prancing boa wearing mid 80's guy...barf...just not for me.

My friend Scott Goldstein used to be a photographer in the wrestling business. He now lives in Philly and is good friends with Garvin. If anyone ever has questions for Jimmy let me know and I'll see if Scott can ask him.

I actually thought he was okay in JCP when he came in to feud with Wahoo -- hated him anywhere near Flair, especially seeing Flair struggle with him. The face turn would have been much better if Garvin actually announced he was Ronnie's (kayfabe) brother with some type of dramatic flair.
The announcers wondered why he ran down to help and later he is swearing revenge and they never ask him why.
So if he comes in to the WWF what would they have done? Would Vince push the Cheryl Roberts type angle where Rude goes after Precious

I always thought Bill Watts used him to his true potential around 1981, as did Fritz Von Erich a couple years later. I never cared for him in JCP -- face or heel -- and always thought he was an odd-fit for the AWA. That being said, he still managed to draw money with Verne, particularly in the Rick Martel feud.

Garvin is a perfect example of pitting horses vs horses and fighters vs fighters. In WCCW, he was the perfect foil for the faces. Anyplace else? Not really.

I thought that Jimmy Garvin made a solid opponent for Rick Martel's AWA title. The classic scientific babyface vs. the arrogant, flamboyant, preening heel.

Jimmy Garvin in my view thrived best in World Class and AWA largely because he had the perfect foils in the Von Erich's, the late Chris Adams, and Rick Martel. In concert with Fritz and Verne allowing Garvin and the aforementioned talent work together.
IMHO, the casual fans the WWF was catering to in the mid 80's wouldn't have bought him as a serious "threat" to dethrone Hogan. And with his size, Crockett was a better employment choice for him at the time. Since you didn't need to have NFL lineman size in order to progress past curtain jerker status in traditional-kayfabe era NWA territories.

I never cared for Garvin's in ring work, but the guy was pretty darn good on the mic. As far as JCP goes, I actually enjoyed him more as a face.

In regards to Rick Martel possibly having his "Model" persona from Garvin. I recall reading a non-Apter magazine interview in the mid-late 90's, Martel stated that he did some modeling work on the side while working in the Australian circuit. And always knew that if he got an opportunity to play heel. He could incorporate the experience into a heel persona.
