Watching CWF tv from 5-14-88. Wendall Cooley no shows for his match, and Charlie Platt and Gordon Solie say they have no idea where he is. Gordon says that he himself is going on a two week vacation, but IIRC he never came back. I'm guessing this is when these two departed to the USA territory in Knoxville.

You're right on Cooley. Solie had been doing USA tv in Knoxville since late Feb. of '88.

Ok. But am I right that Gordon never came back from his "vacation"? I've heard Cooley say he left because he and Eddie Gilbert didn't get along. Not sure why, maybe something from their UWF days?

Yeah, you're right. Once Gordon left (on his "vacation") he never returned to Alabama tv.No loss--I never cared for Solie. He was a bad fit for Alabama. He worked much better in Ga. & Fla.. I didn't like him in Knoxville for Fuller's USA, either.

I liked Gordon. I guess it's all about what you get used to. He was the first wrestling announcer I ever heard.

I, met Gordon twice--once at a card in Tampa, Jan. 1983, & at a wrestling fan convention in Birminghamin 1987. Both times he was drunk, smelling like alcohol, & was rude to fans who TRIED to talk to him. But, besides his personally being a jerk those two times, I just never cared for him as an announcer. To each his own.

Understood. I've learned that actually meeting someone can change your opinion of a lot of people. Gordon is one of my favorites. Maybe just familiarity.

By the way, Tojo, I really enjoy your comments, insight, and memories. Thanks for sharing with us.
