I loved this version of Bob. I would have loved to have seen what he could have done in the spot. That said, however, there's no way the WWF/McMahon, in the shambles the business was, could have thought any run beyond what he had would have been good for business.

Diesel, Bret, Michaels, etc. were not the answer or were even close to carrying this company back to respectability.

they did keep it afloat though, you have to give them that.

if it was their FAULT, then name for me any other territory or federation anywhere in the world, outside japan, that drew bigger cards on a regular basis during this time frame.

I'll be selling merch at the line to urinate on Cornette's grave...

It would have been interesting had Bob turned heel in 1984 and challenged Hulk

Also Backlund was a pretty bad worker as a heel, so if the match went any length of time, it would've been bad.  If I recall, some of the Diesel-Backlund rematches were changed to Diesel-Jeff Jarrett because of this.

As others have mentioned, the babyface winning the title in short fashion is a WWE pattern (Hogan-Sheik, Warrior-HTM, Diesel-Backlund).  Ironically, they even tried it with Sheamus-Daniel Bryan which did create a new babyface star...although the wrong one!

I agree...Backlund was good in the match where he turned on Brett...but after that ..the great Bob Backlund was just a cartoon helping out his former boss Vince McMahon.
