I think the Fritz Von Erich retirement show at Texas Stadium failed to draw for several reasons. The promotion was pretty cold in general. I don't think fans saw Bundy as a worthy foe for such an occasion and the TV build up from what I've seen didn't do enough to set up the match. Bundy had turned on the Von Erichs and was a monster heel, but this was his first big push and the heat didn't seem hot enough. The overabundance of seats also disturbed the supply/demand equation. Although the distant ones wouldn't be sold, there were 65,000 plus seats and with no field level seating, the closest fans were quite a distance from the ring for higher prices. So fans had to pay more to sit further away and there was no chance of the place selling out at all. The idea of buying your ticket heavily in advance couldn't reasonably be pushed. For what it's worth Fritz vs. Dory Funk Jr. in 1972 and Fritz vs. Terry Funk in 1976 drew 24,000 and 17,000 respectively to Texas Stadium with far better builds to each main event.
Regarding the August 1982 Reunion Arena show, I've long understood the attendance was more like 12,000, but that the crowd was on fire and it set the stage for the Christmas show selling out and the big 1983 to mid 1986 run that followed.
