May have been discussed already but does anyone know the definite truth about the coconut incident?  Was it gimmicked (i.e. drilled out) to break easier?  I know that a lot of what you hear in interviews has to be taken with a grain of salt but I have heard Piper question "is Jimmy really ok with this?"

In his book, Piper indicates it was not gimmicked. I saw the incident, and my personal opinion is, there is no way that could have happened if it had NOT been 'prepared' beforehand. Just my opinion. What do I know?

Looking at the clip, it seems like the coconut breaks over Snuka's beaded headband.  That thing looked hard enough to offer some protection.

I really haven’t heard one way or the other but I would think the coconut was worked in some fashion so it would smash upon contact.

I mean, Snuka was known for his hard head but if it was not rigged, you’re talking the equivalent of smashing a piece of wood over someone’s head and hoping it shatters perfectly. Aside from worrying about an injury, you’d probably want it to come off looking as good as it did too. I don’t know if they would leave all this to chance using an unaltered solid coconut.

As silly as it sounds, falling coconuts actually kill people after falling on their heads. I know I read somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 people a year die as a direct result of coconut falling on their head.

Not sure Vince would want to put one of his marquee workers in harm’s way like that but who knows crazier things have gone down.

tamlaie and claw and some others may remember this, but there was a former WWF insider who posted on the old board and on other sites who gave some good perspectives into looking behind the scenes of the WWF during that time period....ring attendant? truck driver? etc.

His take on it was that there were a couple or even several of the cocunuts hollwed out and pre-broken.  I cannot remember the exact explantion....that was probably around 9 or 10 years ago.  They wanted the effect of the cocunut shattering.  Just because you nail somebody with a coconut does not mean that it is going ot shatter.  They wanted it to shatter.  The headband was the target to ensure the pre-broken coconut would bust back open on impact.

I forget the guy's username on this board.  He had WWWF or something like that in the name.  He was an excellent source of information. And just like like things used to happen on the old board, Buddy Rose tunred into a little baby pouted that the guy was breaking kayfabe and the he knew the whole story and the cocunt was real and Jimmy siad something to the effect, "Just make sure you bring it when you hit me."
The WWF guy posted a little more and then left the board.  One of several good posters that good ol' Buddy drive off of the board with his so-called "respect" and "I know because I was there" attitude.

The guy's story sounded more and more genuine that good ol' Buddy's crap.

When Snuka turned face Ray Stevens took Freddie Blassie's cane and hit him over the head. If you watch the clip slowly you can see the cane already broken in Stevens' hand before hitting Snuka.

To further spoil the illusion for you Snuka then goes to his trunks to pull out a red sponge and wipes it all over his forehead. No blade job.

So my point is gimmicked cane then why not a gimmicked coconut.

I know how incredibly hard a coconut is. I spent the better part of an hour once trying to blast one open with a hammer. There are methods that make it easier to open one but it takes more time and effort than attempting to break it over someones forehead. A blow that hard would surely kill or severely injure the recipient and it would need to be delivered by more force than Piper could summon. Do a search for how to open a coconut and you'll get the full impact of how absurd what Piper says about it not being gimmicked really is.

I believe that Chief Jay Strongbow stopped at a local supermarket in Allentown, PA a few hours before the TV taping to pick up the fruit.

I tried to break one against a wall once with a shot similar to the one Piper gave Snuka and even with a running start I couldn't do it.

Snuka would have at the very least suffered a concussion and the side of his head would have been swollen and that accounts for Piper hitting the beads.

A lot of guys kayfabe for so long they forget how to turn it off, which is understandable.

and Piper did all of the magician's tricks to fool people. He let the non-gimmicked coconuts bounce off the table to let people hear how hard they were so when he hit Snuka it creates the illusion that he hit him with something hard.

Snuka also knocks down the Pit so Piper can have his escape route, but even the first time I saw it, the lack of coconut milk gave it away. It was pre cut and drained.

Oh yeah that whole coconut thing was rig beside that fact that Snuka was up and staggering around after it happen. If you hit someone with something that hard they are going to go out like a light!

No milk , not real , pre-cut . Great angle however and the fact that this is even a debate proves it .

I can picture Jay Strongbow at some Allentown grocery store ....

"Excuse me Mr Strongbow , but what brings you here today and what brings you here buying coconuts and bananas ?"
"Oh the Samoans are a little hungry and asked me to pick them up a snack."
