The best information we've been able to uncover is that what little there is has already been circulating for a few yeras.  The Maple Leaf Gardens tapes are either already out there (Race/Funk, Andre/Sheik, etc.) or inteh hands of teh Tunneys or the WWE.  The CHCH stuff went the way of the Buffalo-NWF, and Los Angeles and nearly every other promotions stuff from the 60s and 70s....

....tape over until no longer usable and throw away.

Like a Picasso fan hearing the canvasses were burnt...that actually saddened me.

Doncha dare miss it, no more

Apparantly Vicious Verne Siebert (who posts on the Vancouver board) has Maple Leaf Wrestling tapes.

yes Verne has some 81 not the greatest quality though, there is some 83-84 on e-bay right now,  I have bits of 81-82  and the occasional 70's match,
don't think it's a matter of no tape, there is the rights issue and who owns them, according to the CBC  they have lots of footage but no permissions.

CBC?  Must be really old stuff there.  Can't think of the last time the CBC broadcast wrestling.  '59 maybe?

For the CHCH-TV stuff, for them, ownership concerns woudl rest in one of three places:  WWE, the Tunney Family, or public domain (It has been over 30 years for some of it, if it exists).

.....CBC, eh?

Remember that there are two affiliate networks in the CBC grid (Part of the network, but not a part of the Crown Corp.) The Asper's own both of them, and I believe one of them is in Lethbridge IIRC. So, it may be old AWA or Stampede stuff that was sent on tape to the affiliate.

They (meaning the broad umbrella) also own the NFB's "Wrestling" of course, which contains footage from '61.

Also, a friend of mine who grew up in Vankleek Hill, Ontario (About an hour east of Ottawa, right on the Ont/Que border) swears that the RC affiliate he saw out of Montreal as a kid broadcast wrestling from somewhere in the States. I've doubted him, but he's adamant, says he's certain it was International or IWA or something, but certainly not the Brito, Quinn promotion. (I know, a whole other can of worms...) So perhaps the CBC is also protecting wrestling that aired on RC affiliates.

Anyhow, there's three possibilities for your "CBC eh?"

I was referring to the MLG footage, not the TV studio stuff,  according to the CBC they have lots of wrestling footage

The MLG footage may be in a bit of legalistic limbo.  Obviously, all the WWF stuff belongs to Vinnie.  But what about the rest?  Did Vinnie buy all the rights when he bought out Maple Leaf?  Or does the older stuff belong to The Tunneys or someone else?  The Terry Funk-Harley Race title change has been going around the trading boards for a while (although I think that Ron Martinez' company actually has the rights to them, and has leased them to VCI and WC, since I have seen the match from both companies' products).  And if this is the case, how did Ron get the rights to it/them and how much of the other stuff might he have.

As fot the CBC, who knows what they might have.  We know from points made on the Montreal forum that the local TV stations there seem to be able todig out stuff that no-one knew still existed every so often, but refuse to admit to how much they got.  The CBC probably has stuff going back to the 1950s, and as noted by Stephen Dame, probably a lot more newer stuff from the 80s than they may be willing to let on (if AWA, does it belong to Gagne, Vinnie or this "Gagner" guy who supposedly bought the rights to the name?)

Don't you love trademark and copyright stuff.......?   :P

HERE'S THE LATEST...

I SPOKE PERSONALLY WITH THE FOLKS AT CHCH YESTERDAY. ACCORDING TO THEM, WHEN THEIR RELATIONSHIP ENDED WITH TUNNEY PROMOTIONS, ALL OF THE "MASTERS" WERE GIVEN TO JACK TUNNEY. KNOWING FULL WELL OF HIS RECENT DEMISE, THEY SURMISED THAT THE OLDER TAPES (19? -1984) WOULD BE IN THE POSSESSION OF PAT (JACK'S LADYFRIEND PATRICIA ZOWNIR) OR JANE OR JACKIE (HIS DAUGHTERS). DON'T KNOW IF OR WHERE EDDY TUNNEY (JACK'S UNCLE AND SILENT MLW PARTNER) FITS INTO ALL OF THIS, HE MAY HAVE PREDECEASED JACK. THEN AGAIN, VINCE MAY HAVE AQUIRED THE ENTIRE LIBRARY WHEN HE TOOK OVER THE TERRITORY.

...AND THE SEARCH CONTINUES

There is something on the CBC website related to wrestling. I am not sure of the url now; but there was really good stuff of the Wildman in 1980 ( interviewed by a very good looking Sylvia Tyson) and Danny Johnson.

Yeah, the guy who posted that musta been a really great dude... in fact if you search "CBC" and "history" here, or over at WC, you'll be able to find the URL. Or you can manually search www.cbc.ca/archives
