I recall the Apter Mags saying that it was a UWF title (they even listed Windham at #1 in the UWF ratings under the Heavyweight Champion). After Starrcade '87, the same magazines said it was now a full-fledged NWA title.
Was it really a UWF belt at first?

I think it was introduced as a UWF title because the title tournament was shown on UWF. It's previous history started in Amarillo I think.

I was always under the impression that the title was supposed to be recognized by both the NWA and UWF and it's holder was to be a top contender for both World titles during the 2 promotions brief co existence.

Didn't the belt have the NWA letters on it? I never really understood why it was being pushed as a thing in the UWF who ran what Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma.

The Western Belt was used for many years on the Main Event all the way up to 1992 at the latest.

I don't think so. Larry Zbyszko was the final champion and he left the company to return to the AWA in 1989.

Definitely was a UWF title to start with. Never really had any importance to it though.

When Larry Z left the promotion to go work for AWA in winter 1989 he vacated the title after holding it for a year. Surprised Dusty did not put the title on himself in 1988.
