I recall reading the Apter mags in 1984/1985 and they listed the International title as the main title, with the Southern champion ranked right behind. I always figured that the Southern was considered the main title by the promotion (although the word "International" is certainly broader than "Southern")

When I started collecting the Apter Mags in 1986 I'm pretty sure the Southern champion (or I think they called it "Mid-Southern" then in order not to confuse it with the Southern title in Florida) was ranked #1 in the "Mid-Southern" area

Southern title was considered the top singles title with the exception of a period time from February 1983 when Austin Idol was introduced as the International, champion until Lawler dropped the belt for good in August 1983 to Ken Patera.
I would argue that it was the number 2 title in importance for about a year where it was then on even footing with the Mid America title. Why Jarrett decided to devalue the title so quickly is still a mystery to me all these years later.
