Oh, he definitely wanted it. He just couldn't get a foothold in to get it. Memphis fans refused to embrace WWF style professional wrestling for a long time. It wasn't until the mid-90s before he even had a chance at it, and by then he had developed a working relationship with the USWA as a feeder system.

WWF wrestling was easy to access at the time no matter where you were. I lived in the Memphis territory, in a rural area now less, and our local video store stocked WWF tapes. The newest Coliseum Video releases were always there as far back as 1987.
The fact was, we preferred Memphis' style to the WWF's style. I loved pro wrestling as a whole, but Memphis was (and still is) my favorite of that era.
