the tv title tournament was right about the time i first got into icw and i was amazed at the strong cast of wrestlers in the group at the time.i certainly dont recall too many bouts of the event, but here are a few:#1 jim pride upset rip rogers #2 randy savage was given a bye to the quarter finals as icw world champ #3 bob orton jr was to wrestle jeff sword early in the tournament( when sword was still a face) .we all know savage lost to bob roop in the finals..does anybody else remember any matches in this sequence and who prevailed in the bouts

I was thinking I read somewhere Big Boy Williams beat Boris Malenko in the tournament.I know Savage beat Whatley to get to the finals , and Bob Roop beat the Best ( Bob Orton Jr) to get to the final match . Does anybody recall if the had a tournament bracket set up or was Angelo just winging matches to set up the finals?

I'm stilltrying to figure out the exact date of the tv title culmination and the date that it aired on tv. There was an icw poster from Harlan ky advertising a tv title bout for Randy Savage facing tv champ Bob Roop on Saturday August 30 1980 . I'm pretty sure the title record I've seen has Roop winning it in early september 1980 .I'll try and convene facts to ascertain the air date and the matcj date of the tv taping when Savage got pinned by Roop for the victory.

Did they actually show the brackets for the tournament. It's been so long I can't recall. I basically just recall the final four and how those bouts went down.
I wonder how many people started the tournament. This was when a lot of people were leaving(Malenko, Barry O, Terri Gibbs,) so they probably had them lose on their exit shows.

I could be wrong, but I think Garvin faced Barry O in the tournament. This is when the hypodermic needle came into play. Barry and Orton were suspended. This is where the Best came in(Orton in a mask).
Somehow, Orton was allowed to compete in the tournamen following his suspension. He was to face Lanny in one of the rounds. Before the match, Orton carries an unconscious body over his shoulders. The person is wearing the mask of the Best. Orton & Izzy announce they're going to reveal who the Best really is, and it's Roop. Lanny jumps out of the ring to protest and gets slapped by Orton. Lanny chases Orton into the ring and lays him out with 3 straight dropkicks. Meanwhile, Izzy is laying into Roop, who's still out of it. Lanny jumps out to save Roop, and gets counted out.
The following week, Orton is to face Pez Whatley. Orton attacks before the bell. Meanwhile, Lanny approaches John Beck with a gym bag. He says it belongs to Orton and pulls out the mask of the Best and his tights. Izzy alerts Orton who turns his attention to what Lanny is doing. This allows Pez for the comeback. He knocks him out of the ring with a dropkick. Orton goes to the announcers desk and grabs the gym bag. He says "What are you doing with my gym bag? That's not yours!" or something to that affect. He takes the bag with him back to the locker room and gets counted out.
Following the Jim Pride upset win, Rip Rogers tore into him. He tied Pride up in the ring ropes and layed into him. Rick McCord hits the ring to make the save. Doug Vines, providing color with John Beck for the match, hits the ring and jumps McCord from behind. Vines holds McCord while Rogers busts him open with a chain. Pride gets untangled to make the save. As luck would have it, McCord and Vines are to face one another in the tournament. McCord is gaining the upper hand until the ref accidently gets knocked out. I seem to recall that McCord was preparing to whip Vines into the ropes as the ref starts to wake up. Vines uses this to throw himself over the top rope. The ref thinks he saw McCord throw Vines over the top rope, and is disqualified.
The next week, Vines loses to Big Boy Williams. Can't remember who Williams faced next in the tournament.
I do recall that during the TV Title final, Ronnie Garvin was doing color. Savage gets his foot on the rope while trying to pin Roop(I think). Garvin rings the bell after the two count. Savage jumps up thinking he's won, but the ref points out that it was only a two count. This allows Roop to roll up Savage with a small package for the win and the title. This also sets into motion the Garvin/Savage feud, where Wee Willie gets a top of the rope elbow from Savage and Roop under the mask as The Assassin.
I'm not 100 percent certain on this. But it's what I seem to remember.

So a couple of questions?
Did they actually show brackets of the participants at any time during the tournament?
Did Garvin lose to whoever he was facing when he was injected by the hypo needle..... Ronnie would seem to be a favorite in the tournament so I guess that would be a way to get him eliminated and save face.
I think Orton Jr was banned from the tournament after the hypo incident but The Best was granted a spot so thus Orton carried on after his elimination .
Best of my recollections- as I do remember vividly your descriptions above.... just didn't realize they were tournament bouts. I do recall Savage wasn't on the first 3 or so episodes of ICW I saw and that would have been close to the beginning of the tournament.

Not sure if this is accurate but I found it on a title history website ; one of the few things I actually was excited to see on these "sites".
Looks to be what could have occurred but not sure of origin so take with a grain of salt.
Can't see Savage not participating so that too makes me wonder if this is valid.

Of course the above brackets are for the tag team wild card match up tournament held in Johnson City Tennessee early 1982 . My error in putting them on this thread.
I did just locate the Bob Orton Jr vs Jeff Sword bout on video from the TV tourney. It evidently was taped the same show as the Malenko-Tony Peters vs Bob Roop + Big Boy Williams tag bout in Lexington. Sword puts up a great fight against Orton Jr and gets him in the bear hug 3/4 times securely but Orton wins pinning him with legs elevated on the ropes for leverage. Super story telling bout as Sword looks quality in defeat.

Just saw the last few posts on this, and from my occasionally vivid memory, I recall that Ronnie Garvin lost via countout to Superstar Berry O after the hypodermic needle attack. Not sure how the bracketing went. I saw ICW only for about a year after the UHF station here got their syndicated tapes about a year after they originally were shown. Poffos had a skeleton crew come in and tour with smaller India shows billed as copromotions. .

I know that Chief Tapu turned on Garvin he night of the tag team tournament in Johnson City so this chart very well could be valid. Still think Savage would have participated ; so I'm gonna check to see if he wrestled elsewhere that night.
