that lasted for about a month or so in the summer of '88..they tured garvin heel to work with dusty by having him sucker punch dusty during the dreams match with barry windham at the bash in baltimore...

if I recall from Gary's book, Garvin split for the AWA and that ended the pairing.

Gary managed Ron in 1988 for 1 - 2 months. Ron left JCP for AWA or WWF in 1988.

Speaking of Ron, he'll be wrestling tomorrow, Sun., 9-16, at the Knoxviile Fair at a Legends card. Garvin will be wrestling Bob Orton Jr..

Saw some online photos today of Ron Garvin, who wrestled (& lost to Bob Orton Jr.) yesterday in Knoxville, Tenn. at a Legends card. He looks real good for his age.

Wish they stuck with that as a heel Garvin with Mr. Hart would have been gold.

The reason it didn't work out according to Ronnie was he had beaten all the Horsemen in high profile feuds so now Dusty was going to turn him heel and beat Ronnie. So the only thing you seen was the knockout punch and Ronnie split for the AWA. This could make sense looking back it seemed any Babyface that seemed to gain a big following besides Dusty and Magnum/Nikita were turned heel.

One of the funniest things was the promotion claiming Rhodes beat up Garvin in the parking lot which is why he fled the promotion. Dusty's ego was enormous.
Never believed it for a second - even in the eyes of fandom

Ron came from one of the most prestigious wrestling families, THE GARVINS. THE GARVINS were him, Jimmy and Terry. He was a tremendous draw and many people think he may have been the person masquarading as Buddy Rogers the night Bruno won the belt (see other topic for more on that story).
Ronnie was a massive draw everywhere he went. It's a shame so many people only remember him for his memorable WWF run where he lost to Dino Bravo in what was for many people, myself included, a match of the year candidate.
He also was the first wrestler in Georgia to use 'shoot' style mooves later popularized by ~UWF in Japan such as the Garvin Stomp. This was unheard of at the time in Georgia (and most places) and helped the territory thrive for decades.
It was wrestlings worst kept secret that, had Hulk Hogan not signed with Vince Jr, Ronnie Garvin was his second choice. He knew he could trust the Garvins as they were drug-clean and legit tough. However, Ronnie was the only one who could hold the title, draw in New York and Georgia and he was a hooker which meant he could beat Iron Sheik in a shoot(he famously refused to drop the title).
However, Hulk Hogan beat Vern with a front facelock (which means nothing as he caught him lucky and Vern could've legit stretched him), thus releasing him form his AWA duties and the rest is history.
While his NWA title run may not have been memorable, he had to live the gimmick as a lot of civilains would often try to 'shoot' on the champ and take the title in those days. Nobody ever succeeded with HANDS OF STONE.
There was a strong rumor that when Rons' brother Terry died of the cancer they were going to bring in Ronnie for 'one last run' and have him carry the strap until Hulk Hogan was ready to come back. However, as HonkytonkMan wouldn't take a dive (legit) for Randy Savage, they had to give Savage the belt and once again Ronnie got the raw deal. He never let this get him down and his NWA title and MOTY (5stars) finally cemented him as one of the true all time greats.
I know footage does not exist of a lot of these events but I hope my story has painted the pictures in your mind's eye forever.

At Fanfest in Atlanta last year, someone mentioned to Garvin that they loved it when he knocked out Dusty for the money and he replied, "If they had waited a little while, I would have done it for free."

me either. I had always heard the choices were Hogan and Kerry Von Erich, 1A and 1B. Garvin wouldn't have had the charisma for it, IMHO.
