I just watched the Backlund/Afa Houston match from 1983. Paul B notes at the onset that it is the first appearance by Backlund in the Houston ring. I looked up Backlund's results and that is correct.

This has been discussed before but I found it strange that backlund would travel to other areas and wrestle a WWF
Run of mill challenger like Afa....i think the apter mags even did a bit at the time questioning this

Yeah they said that the WWF wasn't worthy of world title recognition  because of this.

Afa was known as a tag wrestler.  I'm guessing this was due to Houston fans not being exposed to the WWF.

I've too have always heard the issue with Backlund was he faced run of the mill WWF challengers in other territories but I don't think that it happened very often...
Besides this match against Afa in Houston, what other areas did Backlund face run of the mill WWF challengers in? I ask because when Backlund came to Florida in the early 1980's he would defend the belt against Florida stars like Ron Bass, King Tonga and Jimmy Garvin. Sure he wrestled Don Muraco too in Florida but Muraco was working in Florida at the time. He defended against Inoki in Florida too.... In Georgia, I know he did  title vs. title against Ric Flair in '82 and I know he defended the WWF title against  Kevin Sullivan also in Georgia in IIRC, 1979... He defended the WWF title against Billy Robinson and Raymond Rougeau in Montreal in the early 1980's and faced The Sheik too. Was that in Detroit?  He faced Ron Starr in L.A. and faced Inoki and Fujinami in Japan.. I'm sure there must be more but I'm just not seing it being true that he only faced or even predominantly faced only WWF challenger's in other territories. I think that was something the Apter mags had us believing but actually didn't happen very often but I can see people being annoyed with seeing him facing Afa in his first Houston appearance especially since Afa wasn't a regular in Houston..

He worked Toronto as WWF Champion and had a title vs. title match there with Bockwinkel in 1979.

He also had one or two title vs. title matches with Race in St. Louis.

He had a title vs. title match with Race three days after beating Graham for WWWF title.

He appeared a lot in Toronto in late 70s and early 80s as WWF Champ

I think he also made some shots for Crockett as WWF Champion.

When the NWA and AWA started doing the Pro Wrestling USA collaboration to counteract Vince,  Backlund came in for them and was actually referred to as the champion minus the belt and did as close to a shoot promo on WWF as you could get at the time without breaking kayfabe

In my opinion I think it was more PWI being angry at WWF , for not allowing them access to their shows.

Spot on

Vince would not allow PWI photographers at MSG starting in 1983

They responded by dropping world title status WWF
