With the recent passing of Del Wilkes, I thought it was appropriate to discuss his run here as The Patriot, where he had his biggest push.
Also what did you think of his feud with the Dark Patriot?

The perfect top babyface for Global during that time. He was at his peak here. The feud with The Dark Patriot was ok. When The Patriot went to All Japan, he seemed to get lost in the shuffle and injuries took their toll. Of course, when he appeared in the WWF, he wasn't the same.

He was booked about as perfectly as you could want to build a babyface gimmick from basically scratch. Between winning both titles (even not accepting his tainted decision and winning a rematch for one), and defeating almost all the top name heels they brought in minus Makhan Singh. The only bad part of the Dark Patriot angle is that he left and never got his revenge. It's possible they knew he was leaving and built the angle because of that, but seemed like it lasted long enough they probably didn't know that until part way through especially since the Eddie Gilbert face turn seemed a bit rushed to fill the top babyface role.

So I was elementary school age during the GWF's time and I was sold on The Patriot and from that point on looked at him as a major talent. I remember being frustrated as a kid when he was in WCW that he was stuck with Bagwell. Glad he had that final run in WWF.

I always really liked the Patriot gimmick and Del Wilkes, I was a huge fan of the feud with Doug Gilbert as the Dark Patriot. I have awesome memories of Global from this timeframe and this was one of my favorite things about Global.

I thought he was going to be a big star in WCW or the WWF. But it didn't pan out.

I liked him when he was the trooper in the a
AWA. Haha so funny when he would write those citations and pin them to the jobbers bare chests ....

I didn't see much of The Patriot. But, I did see Wilkes doing the Trooper thing in the AWA's dying days. That gimmick was pretty terrible.

| I hate sports entertainment but I love wrestling. Hence, I don't watch the business any more. :(
I envy those who lived in a territory. I grew up in Tucson, AZ. My "territory" was being a WWF "C" town.
I believe the business fell on its ass in the early 90's because WCW started to copy WWF when it really should have been the other way around.

It was great seeing him so high on the card in WWF 1997 but I feel like he wouldn't have gone much further if he had been healthy. Bret left, and their feud was really already done so he doesn't have anyone really to go against. Vader slipped far down the card and it was the more brash type of guys making headlines. Del would have been lost, probably used for opening matches and also probably embarrassed by DX in some silly segment. Then, I see him getting signed back to WCW since he had a nice position with WWF for a few months. But then, going the way of Bulldog and Anvil-not doing much.

The Dark Patriot was EddieGilbert's brother Doug Gilbert.
And to answer the earlier question, he was in Global, I want to say maybe fall or winter of 1991, up until April of 1992? Not coincidentally, Eddie ditched the company the same time.

If he stuck around and didn't get career-endingly injured, he could have had a/the Kurt Angle role.
Maybe having a phony superhero around in the Attitude Era would have made the WWF not think of the Blue Blazer reboot, and...you know.
Who had Del Wilkes as a Butterfly Effect catalyst on their bingo card?

It was a matter of when and not if for Wilkes in 1997. He was already physically shot from years of football, domestic wrestling, and the brutal All-Japan style, and got a mark doctor to give him a clean bill of health that he didn't remotely have just to get a last WWF payday.
