Yesterday I received information of an alleged altercation that took place between Former Boxing Champion Sonny Liston and Dick The Bruiser in Vegas that had DTB back down. I'm saying Urban Legend - Myth but figured I would post this to see if by chance there is some actual truth to this.

Quite interesting. Thank you for posting the link. Kind of Apropo I suppose being that The Tropicana in Vegas is shutting its doors after 67 yrs.

It looks like there are 2 or 3 versions of what happened between Sonny Liston & DTB. One version has DTB getting smacked down by Liston and another version of DTB apologizing to Liston.

Never heard this story before. Of course heard about the Bruiser and Alex Karass incident, but not this one.

I think DTB was more afraid of his mother especially when he did not want to be on the parade float for a JFK rally or function. " You're going to be on that parade float Dick or i'll have the Urinal removed from the master bedroom bathroom. "
Verne cleaned DTB clock it's been said in a couple dressing room dust ups.

Those of you who know me on this site know I loved my "rassling" pre the McMahon/Bollea/Sports Entertainment circus. However, my closest friends on this site know my true passion was boxing. I have been watching boxing since the early 60s. Liston against Bruiser - I will hurt my sides laughing.
Liston was the Jim Brown of boxing - a man amongst boys. In a real fight, he would have blitzkrieged Bruiser so fast he could have had a second serving of Crusher without breaking a sweat. In fact, I don't believe there ever was an actual altercation. It wouldn't have been a work. Bruiser would not have wanted to receive a phenomenally quick beating
Read up on Liston. Young Liston was an enforcer for the shady side of St Louis' streets resulting in him gong to prison. By the time Ali/Clay beat him in 1964, Liston was an old man by boxing standards -- likely much older than his given age. Liston was also rusty because he hadn't fought a tough round in years. He won the title with a first round knockout of Floyd Patterson and knocked him out again in the first round of the rematch. Boxers, especially aging boxers, get rusty quickly when they don't fight any hard rounds.. Also, Sonny undertrained and underestimated Clay. The only reason Clay got the fight was because there weren't any other fighters who were given a chance against Liston. The young Clay at least had the rep of a gold medalist.in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. Liston was afraid he was going to kill Clay. In fact, the fight was almost cancelled at the weigh in when Clay's heart rate was measured at 120, almost double his norm of 54. I would have loved to see prime Liston against prime Clay/Ali. That would have been a fight for the ages.

I go along with your thoughts Louie D. Yes Sir. Never proven but the Mob was not happy with Charles Sonny Liston when he refused to take a dive for Chuck Wepner or he possibly could have done a double cross.
Urban legend is that Liston was given a " Hot Dose " which was fatal. Maybe some day a movie will be made about Sonny Liston.

I think a lot would depend on when this was alleged to have occurred. Liston in his day was one tough SOB.
Second even in his burned out years all he would have to do it strike first, most likely with a combo,, and DTB would be pretty much done. Even if DTB was as tough as claimed Liston was one of the best of the hard hitters. Boxers tend to be faster and are more dangerous from a distance. A wrestler needs to get close to execute his moves. Wrestlers are also not accustom to being nailed with a punch delivered properly by a boxer. There are punches and then there a proper boxing punches.

Quoted from: Daniel, April 24th, 2024 12:48 GMTQuoted from: Sonnyr555, April 02nd, 2024 21:00 GMTIt looks like there are 2 or 3 versions of what happened between Sonny Liston & DTB. One version has DTB getting smacked down by Liston and another version of DTB apologizing to Liston.
Which means that at least 1(or more) version(s) is not true.
It's a boxing forum, where they mock the "pumped-up entertainers". Muhammad Ali was scared of Antonio Inoki. Brock Lesnar did very well in MMA.(Sorry, outside KE). Liston may have been a great boxer, but Bruiser could fight. Or, if Liston was actually in control(which I'm not really believing), someone could pay him to take a dive.
Ali had to "fight" with gloves on. Once off his feet - he would have been doomed. That is the joke of so called "boxer wrestler" matches. This wasn't a match - this was a allegedly to be a "real fight." In other words - gloves off.
LISTON WAS A MONSTER. He was a mass of God given muscle with one of the hardest punches in the history of boxing. He had the longest reach of any heavyweight champ. He also was quite adept at real street fighting, as in having been a street enforcer for the dark side of the St. Louis streets (which is why he ended up in prison as a young man).. He was more than strong enough to hold his own physically and curtail a clumsy Bruiser rush, and he DIDN'T HAVE TO WEAR GLOVES.
Liston would have MURDERED Bruiser in short order in any semblance of a real fight. Crusher would have been a short dessert to follow,
I don't believe there was any "real" chance of such a fight. Bruiser wasn't that stupid. (At least I don't think so - only a moron would have actually looked for a real fight with Liston.)
