80sWrestlingBuff has a thread about the 5 worst color commentators. Several people were debating on certain guys actually being play-by-play men instead. How about doing the 5 worst play-by-play announcers for those nit pickers. Here's mine: 1. Doyle King. He knew next to nothing about wrestling, but was the lead play-by-play guy by default for a promotion with a daily show on ESPN. He went from being the ring announcer to play-by-play guy just so they could run an insane angle with David Webb thinking he was Elvis. Then Doyle would spend HUGE amounts of time putting over that they had to pretend Webb was Elvis or it'd mess him up mentally for life. It was absurd and made me every day wish that Craig Johnson would come back to the GWF. 2. Sean Mooney. He wasn't cut out for being a great wrestling announcer. He tried for a long time and while I didn't ever out right hate him I could tell that he was more of a story teller type of announcer than a wrestling guy. 3. Vince McMahon. I could not stand him as the play-by-play guy. He'd get moves wrong, he'd scream that it was over when it never was, he'd be doing the over the top voice rather than being a straight sports announcer. 4. Bob Caudle. I know he's beloved, but I never cared much for him. He was just too grandfatherly for my tastes. He just seemed out of place like he should be calling a Dick the Bruiser vs. The Sheik from 1958 rather than 80s matches with Ric Flair or Terry Funk. He also had the least exciting sounding excited voice I ever heard (if that makes sense.) 5. David McClain. He knew very little about the actual wrestling part of wrestling. Clearly, he was only into promotions and so forth. He was very hard to take seriously which made it very hard to watch what he was calling. He'd take a good match and bring it down just because he would try to make it over the top with gimmickery.

For me, this discussion begins and ends with Ed Whalen. After hearing him on the Stampede Wrestling show from 1961 that recently aired on WWE Classics and on more recent ones from the '80s, I've concluded that he was always terrible. Sure, he knew the names of the holds, but his annoying chuckle, ridiculous putdowns against the heels (i.e. telling JR Foley that he needed to give his jacket back to Bozo the Clown), and weird habits (ex. on the '61 Stampede show, he'd yell "Bang!" anytime a dropkick or bodyslam was given to a wrestler) just put me off. Whalen should have stuck to calling hockey games.

Disagree about.Vknce McMahon He was the lead announcer on the A show of the top promotion in the world He was very good at what he did, he got his guys over.and got his promotion over. It was always a letdown to have Monsoon doing the ppvs because Vince was in the back running the show. Monsoon hadn't sold the ppv on the main tv, Vince did

Worst-- David Crockett. 'look at him Tony look.at him! Oooh oooh!'. One of the first things Turner did when they bought the promotion was take David Crockett off the air

Did Jim Ross replace David Crockett in summer 1988 on TBS WCW?

Quoted from: Darth Sidious, April 23rd, 2024 16:23 GMTDisagree about.Vknce McMahon He was the lead announcer on the A show of the top promotion in the world He was very good at what he did, he got his guys over.and got his promotion over. So by definition anything on WWF TV was the best because it was the biggest promotion? No, I'm not going along with that.
Vince was very good at getting specific angles over, even into the New Generation Era. And pre-expansion he was a very good all-around announcer. But 1985-96 Vince was awful in almost all other facets of play-by-play.
My worst, limiting it to major or semi-major promotions:
1. Rodger Kent
2. Charming though he may be, Corey Macklin
3. Larry Nelson
4. Joey Styles
5. Ed Whalen
I don't know whether to classify David Crockett as play-by-play or color commentary, he and Schiavone didn't really have defined roles working together.

Rodger Kent was a very good TV announcer and was very strong in getting storylines over and the talent being pushed. Even though he was the Ring announcer and the promo announcer getting over the next AWA regular town house shows Marty O'Neill was a Gem.
