I'm sure part of the reason for putting the title on Black Bart was the fact that he was coming off of a high profile, although still midcard, national run on TBS so it was thought he had some name value, but the fans just not buying Bart as a main eventer.
Personally, I always thought Black Bart was an underrated guy who deserved a bigger push then he ever got anywhere.

I would go with Buzz Sawyer. May as well give him a shot with the title. He and Kevin seemed to battle well with each other.
I would imagine that Sawyers personal demons made him a poor candidate in the promotions eyes.

That could be. I don't have a timeline on his personal demons and I don't know what was being said about him by certain people.
It does seem strange though. It's World Class lol. But yeah, perhaps biases were getting in the way with Fritz again.
I have to wonder how much knowledge Fritz had of the personal demons with his talent. It seems he was turning a blind eye to all of that. And not just with his own sons either.

Fritz only was in the office two days a week (usually Mondays and Tuesdays) in the 1980s with Southwest Sports. I think he was either in the dark or in denial or a little bit of both.
He told Gary Hart that Chris Von Erich had to ingest his asthma medicine in a powder in 1986 when Gary thought Chris' was sniffing some substance in the office.
