For those interested, Flair talks about The Von Erichs in his new book.

He mentions a match he had with Kerry in Fort Worth in 1985 ,I think. And he says it was one of the worst matches he ever had. He said Kerry was totally out of it. He was late for the match, showed up in the ring with his boots undone, and Ric had to put Kerry's holds on himself because Kerry was just lost. Has anyone seen this match and is it as bad as Ric say's. The way Ric describes it really drives home how messed up Kerry's life was. He does say he was really fond of Kerry as a person though.

He also mentions that he was good friends with David and that Dave would have become NWA World Champ and that he would have done a great job. But that there was no way that Kerry could have been a long term champ because he was totally unreliable.

I think I've heard of this.  Ric was apparently quite upset afterwards as he always liked to put on a great match.

I imagine it was the match on this card.

1/7/85 Ft. Worth
Rip Oliver beat Buck Zumhofe
One Man Gang beat King Parsons
Billy Jack Haynes beat Gino Hernandez to win TV title
Fantastics beat Kelly Kiniski & Buddy Landell
NWA Champion Ric Flair drew Kerry Von Erich

Heh, if we counted all the held up titles in particular AWA areas and cities, Nick Bockwinkel is a 50+ time Champion--khawk20

The story surrounding the match in question is that Kerry's dog had died and nobody knew where he was until they eventually found him passed out in his car. He was all doped up and out of it and Flair had to carry him for an hour. On commentary, it was explained that he was really under the weather with the flu. After the match, Flair was reportedly so irate that he threw the belt against the wall and said that the Von Erichs (or at least Kerry) were/was a disgrace and had just pissed all over it and everybody who had ever held it.

As for David, the story is that he was supposedly scheduled to win the belt at the 5/6/84 Parade of Champions show (rumors abound that he was supposed to get the title in late '83 but it was pushed back when Jim Crockett got the NWA board to back him on the scenario setting up Starrcade), but unfortunately he died in Japan a few months prior and Kerry ended up getting the spot instead.

I was at that match & it did suck. It also didn't really go an hour. It was the first time I felt cheated watching a Von Erich/Flair match.

I think the Fort Worth TV show broadcast some highlights with Marc Lowrance making the comments about Kerry having the flu and leaving the hospital to wrestle while ill so as not to disappoint the fans. However, because of the low quality of the bout and the need by the promotion to protect Kerry, it never aired in its entirety.

I read the book, and in addition to which has already been mentioned above, Flair had the following comments on the Von Erichs

1) Kerry was genuinly upset about having to job back the NWA title, but by no means stated that Kerry was unprofessional about it
2) Chris used to dress like Kerry and committed suicide after realizing that his wrestling career was going nowhere
3) Mike had no business being a wrestler as he lacked the skills and charisma.  He also indicated that Mike had suffered apparant brain damage after his bout with toxic shock syndrome as his speech was slurred.
4) said the Von Erich kayfabed story about David dieing in Japan as a result of injuries suffered in the ring on that tour was a lie as David had yet to wrestle a match.  Flair also substantiated the rumour that the death was drug related by mentioning the rumour about Brody flushing pills down the toilet shortly after the discovery of the body.
5) Flair pretty much blamed Fritz for the family tragedies by stating that he ignored all the warning signs about his sons that were obvious to everyone else
6) said that planning out a match with Kerry was a waste of time due to the fact that he was always in an impaired state.  Kerry would constantly ask questions about match details that they had discussed earlier. Kerry's constantly impaired state had him worried about his own safety during matches with Kerry, however he found Kerry to be safe worker.

yes! maybe now people will stop denying that David Von Erich was being groomed for the NWA world title when he died, and was going to win it and not just for two weeks like Kerry did.  Flair is admitting basically that the plans were there for David to win the title and that he would have been a good champion

The debate wasn't whether or not he was being groomed for a title run. The debate was, if you'll recall, whether he was promised it.
If anybody did any promising, it was likely Fritz. There's a difference.

This promise/grooming debate does not mean anything, the end result was David was going to get the NWA title.  For months they booked it with David laying out Race, and from there they added to it.

So Kerry was upset that he had to job the belt back to Flair in two weeks? Seems logical but I had also read other posts where it said that Kerry didn't need or want the belt as it would have been too much time on the road.

Interesting, I'd heard similar stories regarding David.  That the day David died in Japan, he was unhappy, because he was in line for the world title and didn't like being on the road that much.  Also have read that David had aspirations outside the pro wrestling business that he might have wanted to pursue, like going on the pro rodeo circuit

I remember seeing Chris in an Apter mag back in 1989 working out with Kerry, and looking like a mini-me of Kerry, with hairstyle and everything. I remember thinking "good luck with that one kid." I read an Apter mag in late 1991 as it reported his suicide on Sep.12, 1991, and was devastated. Tragic. :(
