Verne Gagne vs HANDSOME Jimmy Valiant

Wrestling at it's best for Chicago fans courtesy of Bob Luce. You would only see this match in Chicago. 2 out of 3 falls. Bobby Heenan in Valiant's corner.
Heenan is at his best even though years later he would come out and say that managing the Valiants were a complete waste of his time. You had to love these AWA/WWA  crossover matches.

Luce really built this match up on his TV show.

Great match and I remember a huge crowd. maybe not SRO but this match drew a lot of people. Maybe 9,000?

I think the same ending was used for a Gagne-Ox Baker match a few years later with Starr getting tossed in the ring.

I was at this one.  One of the few times I sat at ringside.  I think I got my tickets from the Fun Club.  Remember that?

A few things I remember.

1.  Handsome Jimmy won the first fall, which deviated from the usual script.  The usual script for 2 out of 3 fall matches usually was the winner of the match wins the first fall, the loser wins the second fall, and the third fall was either a DQ or the winner of the first fall wins the third fall.

2.  I remember the look on Heenan's face after Jimmy won the first fall--Shock and joy.

3.  Years later, I would see this card referenced on this site:
Quote Message
5/5/73 Chicago, IL @ International Amphitheatre
AWA Champion Verne Gagne beat Jimmy Valiant 2/3
Superstar Billy Graham & Ernie Ladd beat Bill Watts & Wahoo McDaniel 2/3
Bob Ellis no contest Baron Von Raschke
Billy Robinson drew Wilbur Snyder
Rene Goulet beat Bull Bullinski
Ric Flair beat Kenny Dillinger

Ric Flair made such an impression on me this night that I completely forgot I saw him before he became The Nature Boy.

Thanks for the lineup.

In the tag match Bill Watts got his neck tied up in the ropes and couldn't continue in the 3rd fall. Ladd and Graham gave Wahoo a beat down and won the match with the 2 on 1 advantage.

This led to a Bruiser and Wahoo win over Ladd and Graham and then Ladd vs Graham a bit later because they turned on each other in the match with Bruiser & Wahoo.

Very good finish to the Verne v Valiant match. Never a bad thing to switch things up a little bit by having the heel take the 1st fall
Very good show all around
