I was visiting a friend in Nanty Glo in the summer of 1982. I was only there for a week but caught a little bit of wrestling on Sat. I remember Larry Zbyszko being on TV cutting a promo, and a match involving some guy named Rocky Jones who seemed to be pretty over as a working class face. I also recall Johnny Valiant being around. Who else was appearing in Pittsburgh around this time?

DURING 1982 BRUNO ALONG WITH DENUCCI, ZBYSZKO, THE VALIANTS, ROCKY JONES (MIKE MASTERS), MANNY SOTO, HANS SCHROEDER, DAVID SAMMARTINO, RON SHAW, JERRY MONTI & LARRY WINTERS MADE UP THIS SMALL PROMOTION.

THEY WOULD ONLY DRAW 150-200 PEOPLE PER SHOW.

DENUCCI WOULD SELL YOU YOUR TICKET AND THE VALIANTS SOLD DRINKS, AT LEAST THAT IS THE WAY IT WAS AT THE HOWARD JOHNSON'S IN MONROEVILLE.

Channel 53 in Pittsburgh ran the tapes.

The promotion tried to rent the Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh for a show. Can't remember if they ever did or not. It was somewhat of a controversy because the people at the Civic Arena were trying to block the Convention Center from booking any kind of sports or entertainment shows.

WPXI-TV did an investigative report and interviewed Bruno about the problems he was having in trying to rent the Convention Center for a show.

Mike Mittman, who had been the timekeeper at the WWF TV tapings in Hamburg, was the original TV voice on the International shows.

They ran mostly in the indie markets and some old Pittsburgh strongholds, Kingwood, WV, Hubbard, OH, but also ran stuff in NJ

Did Nicolai Volkoff ever wrestle for International Wrestling in 1982?
SCW Count Grog - September 19th, 2004 17:18 GMT

I don't remeber Niccoli coming in? Killer Kowalski, the Kelly Twins and others were in. I know they tried to get Tony Atlas but he didn't come in.
gatherer47 - September 20th, 2004 03:51 GMT

They ran a show at Chaney High School in Youngstown,Ohio that had Larry Z vs David Sammartino.Billy Berger was also in this promotion. In fact,he was in charge of the ring.I remember him storing it in an old broken down truck with the words"Hose Bag Hotel" painted on the side.
guest: - September 30th, 2004 19:33 GMT

I think Billy Berger also ran mud wrestling at Fairs. At the Allentown Fair there was a prelim guy that we recognized. I think he ws Berger. We heckled him throughout the show and then foolishly jumped in the mud after the show was over. He chased us out. I think he got a few shots in at my friend but he kind of held back. He was very angry.

Nikolai Volkoff never wrestled for the Allentown based International Wrestling promotion.
guest: - October 01st, 2004 15:11 GMT

Billy Berger (real name William Eichenberger) wrestled as King Berger also with Lord Zoltan in Ohio and West Virginia as a team called "The Royal Noblemen". A feud with Luis Martinez and Dominic DeNucci culminated in a Steel Cage Match that drew over 1,000 fans to the Clarksburg National Guard Armory in West Virginia. This match doubled the attendance of the previous month headlined by Abdullah the Btucher vs. Austin Idol, who was a last minute substitution for Black Jack Mulligan. Zoltan turned on Berger and they feuded throughout West Virginia.

Berger did get involved in Mud Wrestling in which he had a touring groups of girls (some of which were also exotic dancers from the Cleveland area) throughout the country. The troupe was known as the Pittsburgh Bobcats. Drawing large crowds at fire halls, fairs, etc., Berger enlisted the services of Ken Jugan and Luis Martinez to referee. At this point, his Mud Wrestling group was raking in more money and bigger attendances than his pro wrestling shows.

They also ran a show here in Upstate NY, in Latham,NY (just north of Albany) with David (billed as Bruno Jr.) vs. Zbyszko on top. The Valiants were also on the show, and I think a Masked Executioners team. This was after '82, I want to say '84 or '85 but I can't remember the date for sure. Crowd was around 250-350 or so.

Thanks Claw.

the only thing that I do not remember is that this wrestling was Allentown-based. I always thought it was more of a Western PA type of promotion.

So the federation was International Wrestling. That sounds right. I do not remember it going until 1985. There were a couple of different promotions in the Western PA. There was also a promotion that used younger talent. Newt Tattrey ran this promotion. That promotion was definitely around the 1984-1984 timeframe, but it was different than International. Maybe Tattrey took it over at that time and revamped it.
LUCKY - March 26th, 2006 20:44 GMT

I remember this promotion as a kid, I used to watch Killer Kowalski's Bedlam from Boston which lasted around 3-4 months , When they went off the air International took its place ON THE STATION IT WAS ON. David Sammartino, Denucchi,Larry Zybysco and Johnny Valiant were the stars that I knew and the others that did 'enhancement ' work in the WWF . It lasted only a few months before it disappeared from the tv station line up.
SCW Count Grog - March 26th, 2006 22:20 GMT

International Wrestling was around 1982-1983, they stoppe doing the Pittsburgh area by mid 1983 I think.

They ran Kingwood, WV monthly, and somew small towns around PA and Ohio. Jerry & Johnny Valiant managed by Davey O'Hannon, Kowalski, Larry Zbyszko, David Sammartino, Kelly Twins, Dominic DeNucci, Manny & Roberto Soto all appeared as well as Larry Winters, Ed Bonzo and Lord Zoltan.
Feuds were David Sammartino vs Larry Zbyszko, Valiants vs The Soto's, they had a big green guy called the Giant David

I have a VHS 6 hour tape of this with Kowalski, Valiant, Rocky Jones, Davey O Hannon, Zoltan, Berger, and others. I think it came from a TV station in Allentown. Many good matches !
SCW Count Grog - April 01st, 2008 02:00 GMT

wow I remember those tapes, was that with O'Hannon managing the Valiants?
Shah - April 25th, 2008 01:32 GMT

I recall George Cannon aired some of Bruno's tv tapings for awhile in Detroit/Windsor.
I remember Bruno did the color commentary, but don't remember who the other announcer was? David Sammartino was billed as Bruno Jr. at that time too. I can also recall George bringing in some of Bruno's talent to Detroit on occasion. In return, did Bruno ever use any of George's talent? (i.e. Jerry Graham Jr, Wojo, Dick the Bruiser, Calypso Jim, Chris Carter, ect)
TerryWWWF67 - April 25th, 2008 20:04 GMT

Mike Mittman, the timekeeper from the WWWF tapings, was the original announcer. He was replaced by Sam Menacker for the rest of the run.

Yeah, that would be gold to see.

I'd love to see Davey O'Hannon as a manager.
OneFanGang - June 11th, 2015 01:31 GMT

I wonder if anyone has lineups that were advertised or results from this organization. My DeNucci record book after he left the WWF in early 1982 drops off considerably short of a bunch of these shows.

Regarding Giant David, could this have been Scott Schwartz who was featured in the Oceans 11 remake as Bruiser, who does the mock fight with George Clooney? He worked in Herb Abrams UWF as Joshua Ben Gurion as well in the early 90's.

I have Zoltan and Zbyszko record books in progress as well, so any additions will be appreciated.
OneFanGang - June 11th, 2015 01:33 GMT

Never mind on Schwartz... I went back and clicked the link above to find it was his website.

This group was based out of Allentown, but did run shows throughout PA and NJ, including western PA. They started out taping at the Americus Hotel in Allentown, but then moved their TV over to Castle Gardens at the Allentown Fairgrounds. All of the guys mentioned in the previous posts worked pretty regularly for the group, with the exception of Jerry Monti. While he might have worked a few shows for them, he wasn't part of the regular crew. The Kelly Twins and Giant David came along during the tail end of the promotion. The main faces were Bruno Jr., Rocky Jones, Dominic DeNucci and the main heels were Zbyszko, Johnny Valiant, Hans Schroeder. I will have to go back and look at my results, as I attended many of their shows throughout PA and NJ.

I remember at the time, Vince Jr. was concerned about the viability of these guys, as Mel Phillips would always call me after their shows to get the results, attendance, etc. Pretty funny....

I attended one of their shows in Greensburg, PA at the Hempfield HIgh School Gym.
Don't remember the exact year but guess it was in the 82-83 time frame.

Attendance was decent IIRC. I remember the main event being David Sammartino versus Larry Zybysko, who whipped the crowd into a frenzy with stalling tactics.

Johhny Valiant worked Dom Denucci. Valiant bladed, which seemed to have irked one of the school officials on hand who confronted Denucci in private, which just happened to be near where I was sitting. Dominic quickly blew him off.

I recall Davey Hannon on the card as well as a midget match. I also think Rocky Jones working.

Sorry I don't recall the whole card. I'm going from memory.

I have a VCR tape of International wrestling which has Denucci, Valiant, O'Hannon, Mike Mittman announcing which is the same basic group although the tape seems to be from Allentown. Kowalskii, Rocky Jones, Soto too. No Bruno or David although I also have a program with the above people with Bruno and David on cover. I remember watching it on TV.

I have gotten many requests for my VHS tape since my posts here. I have not found anyone local who has the equipment to transfer the VHS to a DVD. I am sorry, but I won't loan or send the tape to someone to do so. I don't recall where I purchased it from but it was many years ago and if something happened it cannot be replaced so I will not let it out of my hands, sorry, I hope you can understand.
Anyway, I have just got it out and began to watch it. It appears to be from an Allentown, PA TV station, It has a date of 1982 at the end of the credits, and contains 4 complete TV shows. The tape contains the complete shows including the commercials which are for a local restaurant,a transmission place, Gennesee Cream ale, attending community college, and from the local cable TV outlet and what all is available on it. The announcers are Sam Menacker and Mike Mittman (former WWF ring announcer). I have gotten through 3 shows so far. Would anyone like me to post the match listings ?
