I was looking through the history of the Universal title.  I noticed that there were alot of hold ups regarding this title.  Was it more or less to get more fans into the building for the rematch.  Just wondering?

I'm not really sure what the answer to this question is but your hint at a possible theory that it was a set up for a future match where more fans might show up if the WWC Universal Title was held up seems logical. It seems short sighted on the promotions part though as it devalues a title considerable in my eyes. I can see it as being effective in certain situations with evenly matched oponents that are close calls which helps build drama & interest. But when it's over used it tends to backfire & have the opposite effect.

It was just the way the title was booked in Puerto Rico, not sure if it still is like that or not.

Colon did this because this way he wouldn't have to do the job too often in order to get the title off of himself. This way he could stroke his ego, remain rarely defeated and still go into the big shows chasing after a title. That way when he won the match, it wasn't just a successful defense, but rather a "big time" title win. The crowd ate it up for the better part of a decade and a half anyway.

I know Carlos used this style of booking quite a bit with his older son Carly as well as Rey Gonzalez in the later years of WWC.

Agree 100% with all you have said guys. That style of booking was the success for WWC over the years, that was the motivation of the fans over the years, it was the rematch for the tittle and a vengeance at the same time, so a big win for Carlos in this special events like Anniversary, Three Kings Day, Thnksgiving Day were the standard during the WWC glory days.

When Rey Gonzalez it was quite different, during his second reign begginning on 1997 and when he became a heel during 1998, Rey lost more times the tittle being defeated and then regaining it defeating his opponent, but there were ocassions that he won the tittle from a different wrestler who defeat him. Currently, he won the tittle a couple of weeks ago defeating Shane the Glamour Boy. The tittle was held up because Noriega leave the promotion and jumped to another promotion.
