A discussion on the WWF board about Dale Wolfe being under consideration for the 3rd Rocker got me thinking. Who(if anyone) would have made a good 3rd man in the high flyers tag team?  Perhaps it could have been someone not pushed at all at the time elevated to this position. Maybe it could have been someone with a completely different style that would have added a new dimension to the team-an enforcer type personality. With both these criteria in mind, my pick would be Herman Schaefer. I can picture him as this ominous force in their corner protecting them from outside interference or the double team efforts from the likes of Studd and Blackwell. Perhaps he could have also been their partner in 6 man tags, etc. Anyone else have thoughts? I am sure I am in the minority here as I would think most people would pick an established, pushed wresler with a similar style like Steve O or Buck Zum Hofe. Or at least someone like Ben DeLeon or Juan Valez(if the promotion was looking to elevate someone). I am sure there are a wide range of opinions here....

A couple of names come to mind.....

Russ Francis and Rick Steamboat.

Also a young Don Muraco could have filled a "high flyer" role.

I would have liked Steve Olsonoski or Ron Ritche if they went forward with such a plan.

Fans were fed a constant diet of Olsonoski and Ritchie as mid card jobbers.  Would they have accepted them in a high-flyer role?  I'm not sure they would have.

The Appraiser and I had a discussion with regards to fans being conditioned as to how they accept wrestlers.

I was contending that Rene Goulet, had he not been a constant mid carder in the AWA, could have been AWA World Champion.  When Nick Bockwinkel entered the AWA, he was immediately given a mega push.  He defeated everyone.  While Goulet on the other hand, though he had his share of victories, never won the big ones.....and he was usually fodder for guys like Larry Hennig, Harley Race, Chris Tolos and many others.

I'm not saying that either Olsonoski or Ritchie were not qualified to fill a high flyer role, only that for their entire AWA careers, fans saw them job to most of the higher up's in the territory.

Perhaps if they'd have left for a couple of years, then it may have been believeable.

My vote would have been for Steve O or Tom Zenk

I always saw Steve O as sort of an unoffical 3rd member of the High Flyers.

I agree with Benlen though, I think Tom Zenk could have worked as well.

Heck, if you're talking early 80's, Rick Martel or Tito Santana could have been in the High Flyer role.

Jerry Blackwell had the dropkick down pretty good, but the tie-die would have made him look alot heavier.

I'll say Steve Regal or Steve O

Bill Savage went over to the (Stu Hart) house and one of the Hart kids was running around with his hair wet. Savage asked why his hair was wet. Stu said, "the little bast--d broke a vase this morning, so I stuck his head in the toilet. Want me to show you again?"

I'd go with Curt Hennig as well as far as the early 1980s go.  If you're talking about from the get-go in the mid 70s I think Greg and Jim could have been proteges of Mister High, Doug Gilbert who would have been the one to pull off the spectacular dropkicks and headscissor combos first, then have Brunzell and Gagne perfect the moves over time.

Gotta go with George on this one, partly. Russ Francis was a big time face, athletic as hell and could have fit the mold. Only problem would be he would have to take off from July thru at least December due to his NFL obligations. Aside from that, and he wasn't in the awa long, how about Orton Jr? He could have stayed face, had more pure mat ability than Gagne and Brunzell and would have added a slight twist to their style. Mic skills probably would have nixed this anyway. Jusat my 2c....

I agree with the post that Steve Olsonoski was generally regarded as the third Flyer.

Mr. Bruiser, perhaps Silo Sam could have been given consideration.
