I'll go with the team that ultimately had no business being listed as champions, because it was booked through the Memphis territory while Jerry Lawler and Bill Dundee were titlists.  They booked a quickie title switch to Hector Guerrero and Doctor D (forget who that really is) for a one week hotshot angle that meant nothing in terms of real drawing power at the gate.

You might think I'm going to say it's Hector and Doctor D who would be the worst, but I'll actually pick Dundee and Lawler.  Mick's choice of Somers and Ustinov are the team they beat to win their first title reign, and since Somers was an emergency replacement for the departed Boris Zhukov, I don't begrudge them.  Lawler and Dundee were Memphis'  top guys and they were dethroned in short order by a team that seemed even more makeshift than Somers and Ustinov.  Then, upon their brilliant 2nd title victory, Dundee and Lawler lasted a whole four days before dropping them to Dennis Condrey and Randy Rose.   For "marquee" wrestlers, Jerry and Bill did nothing to establish themselves as a worthy championship team IMO.  They should consider themselves fortunate to have had such awful lighting at their Whitewater, WI title loss for TV; they could slink back to Memphis in disgrace without anyone noticing.

What you fail to realize, lol, is that a four-day title reign in Memphis was like a three month run everywhere else.

I'd personally go with D.J. and The Trooper because they were just so makeshift.

I am in complete agreement with Mr.Disco's posts.
It is funny how we perceive things, though.  Garvin and Regal were a good team as far as delivering a good match.  Same with Rose and Somers.  Both teams put on a better show than The Crusher and Baron Von Raschke.   But Crusher and Raschke were known main-eventers, so the two of them having the AWA tag title was not a come-down on paper.
Regal and Somers were the weak links of their teams.  Only by reputation via the pushes they previously got, not by their in-ring performances (neccessarily).

I'm not really intending to rip on Somers or Regal in the ring. Both were decent workers. My issue is mainly appearances. When guys like the Hart Foundation, Midnight Express, Windham and Rotundo, The Bulldogs etc. hold the belts in other territories, and the AWA has guys who are perceived as nobodies or mid-carders, it makes the AWA look bush league.

I know George has mentioned he preferred Garvin and Regal to the Warriors, but from a national perspective, to go from a world-recognized tag team, to those guys, it just looked really bad, IMO.

I had no problem wuith Garvin and Regal, the freebirds didn't need the belts to get over.  My vote goes to somers and rose with a close second to Crusher and Baron

I'm still surprised about negative reactions to Rose and Somers. I really enjoyed the team. Again, I'm sure a lot of it has to do with Sherri, but I thought they were entertaining, and their matches with the Rockers were above average.

You know most of us have talked about how bad some of the teams were in the 80's that held the AWA belts, but what about......?

Dale Lewis & Bobby Graham (who was Pat Kennedy in some cities)

Obviously, the AWA wanted the belts off of then champions H. B. Haggerty & Bob Geigel.....so, they have them lose to Lewis & Graham in Rochester, MN on 11/16/1961, and they in turn immediately drop the titles to Bob Geigel & Otto Von Krupp (Boris Malenko) on 11/23/1961....a week later!

I hated those interim title changes!!!  I would rather have had the AWA just come up with an injury (or something) for Haggerty, and have Geigel be allowed to pick Von Krupp as a new partner.

Another one that always fried me was.....
Duke Hoffman & Larry Hennig.
Not that they weren't good champions (at the time), but, what irritated me was, they had Duke and Larry win a big 8 team tournament in St. Paul on 1/15/1962, (which to me was a good way to build them up), but then they have them lose the belts to a "make-shift" team of Bob Geigel & Stan "Krusher" Kowalski only a month later on 2/13/1962 in Minnapolis.

Now, why go to all the bother of building up Hoffman & Hennig, if they are immeditately going to dump them.  And, no offense with Geigel & Kowalski as wrestlers, but as a team

What's even worse about the Geigel & Kowalski combo is, they NEVER lost the belts!  The AWA announced in April 1962 that, Art and Stan Neilson had won the championship in Cincinnati.  No record of a match between the two teams exists!

Wouldn't it have been better to have the Neilson's just beat Hoffman & Hennig

And, what about the crazy way the AWA handled the title when Larry Hennig & Harley Race were champions.  When Hennig is injured in October 1967, Race is allowed to take Chris Markoff aa partner, and retain the titles.  That's ok!  But, in their first defense they drop them to Wilbur Snyder & Pat O'Connor on 11/10/1967....who then immediately lose them to Mitsu Arakawa & Dr. Moto (Tor Kamata) on 12/2/1967.

I would rather have had the AWA just announce that because Hennig & Race can not defend the title due to Larry's injury, they have been stripped of the championship, and Snyder & O'Connor being the #1 contenders are named champions.....or even better, just have an elimiination match between Snyder & O'Connor and Arakawa & Moto.....and let the Japanese team.  Why even bother with Sndyer & O'Connor

The Cortez & Bastien title switch to Bastien & Crusher (upon Cortez's death) is okay with me, because they allowed Bastien & Crusher to defend the championship for a little over 5 months.

These are the title scenarios that bothered me up to 1972.  There were others during the 70's, but we can touch on those another time.

I also thought that the team of  "Playboy" Buddy Rose & Doug Somers was a pretty solid team.  They had a great fued & matches with the Midnight Rockers.
