I could agree with Schmidt starting out as champ.  Everyone hated his guts and he was the number 1 villain in the midwest prior to the AWA, so everybody knew him.

Wilbur Snyder for instance wasn't even active in Minnesota during 1959 and didn't make an appearance until five months after the AWA was officially formed. Here's his first appearance in the AWA.

Nov. 12, 1960 St. Paul Armory Att.-2,449
Joe Scarpello and Jim Hady over Hard Boiled Haggerty and Len Montana (c) by dq (ref Roy McClarty)
 Gene Kiniski over Nick Roberts
Wilbur Snyder over Buddy Blake  :55
 Bob Rassmussen pinned John Swenski

Clawmaster....
The AWA was officially formed on August 8, 1960.  This would make Wilbur Snyder's first St. Paul appearance in November only three months after the alliance came into being.

There was reference made in May 1960 to the AWA, but August 1960 was the official launching of the company.   When Verne Gagne (along with Wally Karbo)  bought the Minneapolis territory from Dennis Stecher, he hooked up the services of a core group of wrestlers, to be his base for the new AWA.

Among those wrestlers was his friend Wilbur Snyder.  Primary others included Tiny Mills, Stan Kowalski, Hans Schmidt, Hans Hermann, Joe Pazandak, Leo Nomellini, H. B. Haggerty, and Joe Scarpello.  During 1960 and 61, these (and a few others) became what he was builiding his AWA from.  And of course, himself as the champion.

"Clawmaster....

I know that. It was late at night and my math skills weren't up to snuff.

Heh, if we counted all the held up titles in particular AWA areas and cities, Nick Bockwinkel is a 50+ time Champion--khawk20

I figured you'd just mis-counted.

But thought I'd clarify it just in case, because I've seen it stated on other venues that the AWA was formed in May 1960, which as stated was not the case.
