I know this has been discussed a lot - but the answer to this question is likely the answer to the TV show I'm trying to place. It was early 70s (71 or 72). We saw it from Toronto. It wasn't Ringside Wrestling and it wasn't CHCH. It wasn't Championship out of Buf/Clev/Det. It certainly wasn't Vancouver's All Star or Clagary's Stampede. It wasn't George Cannon or Milt - or anything out of Montreal (like Grand Prix or All Star or Celebrity). Lord Layton was doing commentary and Whipper Watson showed up. The ref was either Tasker or Flanagan yet it was NOT Ringside and NOT CH.
Did anyone ever confirm what show this match was from?

We talked about that on this forum before (just go through the threads, its around here somewheres). The match itself is available on the Wrestling Gold Volume 5 DVD ("Beat Me if You Can").
I believe that we came to the conclusion after discussing it that there is a case to be made that it was filmed on the Canadian side of the border, but it was for Detroit's Big Time promotion (Farhat's group). Windsor is a possibility, and so is London. Layton's announcing is not unusual, since he was working for both Tunney and Farhat in that capacity.
The big problems are: 1) Jones didn't wrestle for Tunney 2) Watson, in that period, never wrestled for Farhat -- as far as we've been able to find so far.
The only other explanation that we could come up with is that the usual studio/site for Ringside was unavailable one week, and so they filmed/taped elsewhere, and for whatever reason, a couple of these matches are available where 99% of the rest of Ringside isn't.
The unavailability of the usual site for TV taping could also be applied to Farhat's Big Time. Which could explain why some think it was filmed in Windsor (right across the border and cheap, even given teh near-par exchange rate of the time).
Hopefully Greg or Gary or one of the other regulars might have given this some more thought, because it's one of those head-scratchers that have been annoying us for years.....

Thank you, Trav - I only raise it again because I didn't think it was ever solved and I appreciate your response.
I think this was filmed in Toronto in the CFTO channel-9 studio. They had the overhead cameras and the show had Toronto talent - Watson, Layton, Sheik and Weasel (Sheik and Farouk were regulars in Toronto for the early 70s). But as you point out - none of the Ringside footage from that period exists. Yet - we know it was Tunney - because Tunney was there. Thats the biggest clue of all.
Another key could be the audience. From the beginning and during the crowd riot at the end, there is a woman in glasses (and I think a red dress) who tries to get close to the action. I 've never noticed her before (and she is very memorable) - and I've seen many tapes of Sheik in Detroit.
Also the security - which was absent. There was a near riot at the end and Farouk seemed afraid to leave the ring - so he stayed in there with a prone Tom Jones for 5 minutes - even though Sheik had left and the match long over. Maybe, due to security concers, they weren't invited back after that?
Just some thoughts.

But not the Tom Jones that was a regular in Detorit in '71-'74?
ugh. Now I see why CM keeps a bottle of Advil around....
A side-question that might help date this:
There was a period of some months (forget how long) where Sandy Hoyt, CHCH-TV's weatherman replaced Layton for the announcing duties on Ringside. Lord Athol however, still announced for Farhat during this period. Now, I've been told that Lord Athol came back, and announced for Tunney right up until he retired and got a job with (I think) Seagram's
Would that match have been after the Sandy Hoyt period? I seem to recall Sandy doing the announcing in late '73 and/or early '74 (dating this as it occured when I was living on the farm, not in town).....

I remember when this came up on the old board. I remember vividly seeing this match when I was a youngster(late 60s?). The only wrestling we watched was ch9 from Windsor and ch 10 from Jackson Mich. Both were Sheik shows but ch10 had its own studio shows and no Layton for announcer. If ihe tape is NOT ch 9 from Windsor, only thing I can think of is they did the same match with the same finish somewhere else sorta like George Steele did with the guy who could put his shoulder out. Dont know why they would do that, but its possible. JDavis

I can't help you with the location, but the guy in the video is the same Tom Jones who worked all over under that name, Detroit, Oklahoma, Gulf Coast, Florida, Georgia. Same guy that was in World Class under a hood as Mr. Ebony. He has a web site.
Mr. Ebony Tom Jones
Maybe someone can contact him through the site and ask him.

One of the things that I have brought up here in the past is...Flanagan as the ref. Sheiks hair color and length(very short and blackish) The 2 women in the front row(beehive hairdo's) {regulars at Ch.11 tapings} and Layton announccing. Also Whipper being involved with finish although Farouk is talking about Ivan Kalmikoff and his protege Igor during the melee. And this has been discussed on the TWH site also why would Tunney (or for that matter) the Sheik have all of these"Toronto" guys go somewhere else ie. not in the GTA and film a show. I think Terry Dart agreed that this was CFTO b4 ch11 in Hamilton? But I will check the TWH mb and find out. Don't ya just love it!!!

CFTO before CHCH-TV........
hrmm....
I need to watch it again; check to see how much weight Watson is packing.
When did Igor start in Toronto?
And when did CHCH start televising wrestling? Anyone remember? (had to be before '69, and likely before summer '68).

For what it's worth,I've never seen Sheik use that finisher I was a regular at CHCH as a kid,and there seems to be more seating in this venue than I recall. But,that was more than 45 years ago,so the old memory might be playing tricks on me.
