Dan Shocket's Ghost - October 23rd, 2014 21:25 GMT

During the 1990s Hulk Hogan tried to turn his mainstream fame from wrestling into a movie career by starring in a series of corny, family-friendly action movies. I'm sure that many of us have seen 1 or 2 of them if not all, so what ones do you think were the best? What was the worst?

  No Holds Barred    1989
  Suburban Commando  1991
    Mr. Nanny        1993
    Secret Agent Club      1996
    Santa with Muscles      1996

If you watch them with no expectations of a classic cinematic effort then I enjoyed most of them. Santa With Muscles made the least amount of sense to me, but it was still good for what it was supposed to be. I think No Holds Barred actually cracked the top 5 box offices in its opening weekend. If they had used a professional instead of McMahon and Hogan writing it themselves then it may have been a stronger start to turn Hogan into a leading man in Hollywood.

No Holds Barred debuted at #2 it's opening weekend.  Suburban Commando is my favorite one probably.  Thunder in Paradise was probably his best, but it was made for TV so doesn't really count here, even though they turned it into a series afterwards.  It's funny to see them promote that on WWF in late 93, when it actually turned into a big reason he ended up in WCW.

As they say, his movies weren't released, they escaped.

Thunder in Paradise was a cheesy, but decent action series. I watched it fairly regularly back then.

come on....as a 12 year old, No Holds Barred was the greatest thing ever.

hey, during 'Hogan Knows Best" on one episode they show Hogan, daughter Brooke, and Big Show on the set of a movie they were filming, with Hogan and Big Show dressed up in terrycloth robes and sandals as greek gods with long white hair and beards.  Does anyone remember a movie like this that came out in the last few years.    The scene in the HKB episode was on the set and one of the movie's techs is giving Brooke a backrub that was getting too intimate, which infuriates Hogan and Big Show.

Little Hercules in 3D was the movie, it was released in 2009.

No Holds Barred was ok. I liked Suburban Commando. It's pretty cool that Undertaker played a small part in it. I still laugh when I hear his character's kiddy voice. Mr Nanny is a good movie to laugh at. I never saw the other two, but I can imagine I would not like Santa with Muscles.

No Holds Barred, I enjoyed the movie simply because the movie was about wrestling.

About fifteen years ago, Hulk Hogan filmed a movie called McCinsey's Island.

Paul Wight was in this movie along with Grace Jones and Robert Vaughn.

Never even heard of this. Was it ever released? Direct to video?
chrisstlouis - October 27th, 2014 00:33 GMT

I think direct to USA network.

The IMDB says it was released in Kuwait in 2000.

Directed by the same man that brought you Breakin 2 Electric Boogaloo as well as American Ninja.

Also in credits.......Ed Leslie. of course.

Ghost, I never heard of it either until a month ago when I watched it on YouTube.

Hogan made quite a few more tv/direct to video movies while being in WCW:
Spy Hard (1996)
The Ultimate Weapon (1998)
Assault on Devil's Island (1997) aka Shadow Warriors (which features quite a few well known names from the 80's: Carl Weathers, Martin Kove, Billy Drago, Billy Blanks and Shannon Tweed)
Shadow Warriors II: Hunt for the Death Merchant (1999)

The only major release during this time with Hogan in a staring role was 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain in 1998 (and it was a huge box office failure of course)

From the cinematic releases...well they're not good by any means. No Holds Barred and Suburban Commando are probably the best. Mr. Nanny is really stupid and Santa with Muscles gave me a headache.

Thunder in Paradise the TV series is basically a cheesier, dumber version of Knight Rider and is actually a lot of fun to watch while not being sober. The german overdub is hilariously bad and adds to the fun. Also how insane is it to have Sting playing the major bad guy?

Flipping through channels tonight I saw that Encore was actually airing Santa with Muscles and I caught the last 30 minutes or so of it. Pretty terrible but I had no idea the movie featured a very young Mila Kunis.
