I know the two men feuded when Reed first arrived in Mid-South, but who was the original? If I'm not mistaken, Reed was using the Hacksaw moniker prior to his Mid-South days, and Duggan had also been using it prior to Reed's arrival. But who was the first one to use it?

Reed was called "Hacksaw" Butch Reed here in Florida in early 1982...Maybe he used the nickname elsewhere before Florida.

Mid-South Wrestling boasted two "Hacksaws" and two "Expresses" at one point, both of which made for amazing feuds.

OK, call me pathetic, but I actually did a few minutes research on this (at least between Duggan and Reed). Duggan was still going by "Big" Jim Duggan in his Georgia run in late 81. He had a brief run in Houston in early 82 before he came to Mid-South, he started using "Hacksaw". February 1982 is the earliest clip I see of Duggan with the name.
The earliest I see Reed using it is sometime early to mid 1981 in St Louis, feuding with Rufus R. Jones.
I doubt either was the "original", but it appears Reed started using 6-8 months prior to Duggan. If any attorneys want to contact me as an expert witness in the copyright infringement case, I'll be under a rock somewhere

Reed was never Hacksaw in STL . At least not in 81. He was barely Butch here. Reed was a face here as was Jones

I would never call someone who does the proper research "pathetic."

Trademark, not copyright. Trademark applies to names, logos and gimmicks. (E.g., WWE suing WCW because of how Scott Hall was doing his Razor Ramon mannerisms on Nitro in 1996.) Copyright applies to creative works and is what gets videos pulled from YouTube from time to time.

Actually at one time there were three express teams in midsouth. The PYT's were there in 84 too. Although I can't recall if they actually went by PYT Express or not.

“I started off as Big Jim Duggan, with short hair and clean shaven – but that didn’t work.”
He went through a few other names and personas before settling on Hacksaw Jim Duggan.
“It’s actually from my football days. I used to hack my way through the wedge. So we tried Hacksaw and it kind of stuck.
I also remember Hacksaw Higgins's name in Apter mags.

This "Hacksaw" was Larry Higgins.. I recently saw a battle royal from Houston in November of 1983 and he was announced as and referred to during the match by the announcer as Larry Higgins. I'm pretty sure he started being called "Hacksaw" Higgins in 1984 in the Central States territory.
