I grew up in & around New York City so my only exposure to Johnny Weaver was articles and features in the Apter mags. My question to fans who grew up in the Carolinas (or Virginia) is just how over was he in the 60s, 70s, and 80s? He rarely left Jim Crockett Promotions to wrestle outside the territory. Here are his runs in JCP
February 17, 1962 - January 29, 1963
July 1, 1963 - November 30, 1974
September 29, 1975 - October 7, 1976
February 18, 1977 - November 13, 1987
Pretty much 25 years with the same employer before moving on to the Charlotte/Mecklenburg County Sheriff's office for another 20 year career as a deputy.
What are your thoughts on Mr. Johnny Weaver?

I had just discovered wrestling on tv a few months before he came to JCP in 1962.During his years working on top between 1962 and early 1974, he was the very best I saw in the ring. His popularity and drawing power was something you would have to see for yourself to believe.Only his partner of many years,George Becker and Jerry Brisco from 1970-74 came close to what Johnny did.I always felt Johnny was to Jim Crockett Promotions what Bruno Sammartino was to the WWWF. During Johnny's heyday, Jim Crockett promotions was doing three tv shows a week (four until early 1967) ,fifteen house shows a week and everyone was off on Sunday.Even at that, the promotion was drawing more than one million fans each year. How many territories were doing that?I think it is important to mention that whether tag or singles matches,Johnny always had excellent opponents who rotated in and out of the area to keep things fresh.
Even in the later years of his career (late 70's and early 80's),Johnny could be wrestling on the undercard and still get the biggest response of the night.I saw him on many shows during that period wrestling Brute Bernard,Swede Hanson or Gene Anderson and it would be my favorite match of the night.

Everyone loved Johnny Weaver even when he slipped down the card. He was a super nice guy. What more could can be said? People liked to see him and Abe Jacobs another guy who even when they got a little older and slipped down the card from main events, people loved to see them hence they were able to work in the MID ATLANTIC for a long time.

I have a dvd where he beat Baron Von Raschke for the NWA TV title in 1978.
He lost the title back a few weeks later.
I thought he was a good wrestler and good announcer.

I guess some of you are wondering why I hadn't jumped in and commented on this, before now. Well, I just wanted to see what type of comments were made first.
Simply put, Johnny was the glue that held JCP together for many years. He wore many hats during his 30+ years with JCP. From wrestler to booker, talent coordinator, announcer and adviser, he could literally do it all.
Johnny had a tremendous mind for wrestling. Hence, me dubbing him "The Dean of professional wrestling".
For me, it was a true honor and privilege to know him, work with him and call him my friend.
Johnny is buried in the same cemetery as another good friend, Gene Anderson. Their graves are only a few steps apart. I have often wondered if they have reconnected and are booking matches in Heaven.

Johnny Weaver wrestled under a mask for a short time in the early to mid 1980s in a angle vs the Assassins.
Who remembers that angle?
I think it was 1984 and the short feud started in a dressing room interview that led to a fight between Johnny Weaver and the Assassin.
Johnny Weaver then started wearing a mask and calling himself the Ultimate Assassin.

I'm 52 years old, and I was born and raised in Charleston WV. Johnny was a HERO to all the wrestling fans I knew - both young and old. Back in the good 'ol days you could easily tell the Baby Faces from the Heels. Johnny was the Ultimate Face!

I agree.
He was underrated, but he had a great professional look and always wore nice suits.
He was a class act as an announcer.
He was generally real happy and friendly as an announcer also.

Only saw Johnny from June '77 - on but he was always way, WAY over even on the undercard at Charleston's County Hall. In a pinch he still semi and main evented.
I think the comment from Rich says it best. "He could literally do it all"

He was one of several wrestlers mentioned, but not actually appearing, in Verne Gagne's "The Wrestler." I don't think they just picked his name randomly.

Was Johnny Weaver a road agent for WCW right after Turner bought the company? They hit Greenville SC on Friday March 10, 1989 for a house show and I was purchasing food and drinks and he came up and basically said he needed 2 drinks and quick. He did smile at the guy fixing them though. Seemed nice but in a hurry and he was dressed in suit and tie like most road agents of the day. Just curious.

I think Penny was with him though. I assumed it was her. VERY attractive older lady wearing a nice dress. Perhaps they were there just to take in the show?
