Are you talking about Matia? I never said that he bladed, just that he picked at his forehead. If he'd drawn blood, I doubt that he would have been allowed to wrestle, at least on television, until he was patched up.

Now here's Charlie as he tries his luck against Sgt. Slaughter:

1. This match was taped Tuesday, March 27, 1984 in Allentown and aired on Championship the weekend of April 7, 1984.

2. Joe announces Sarge's weight at 235 pounds, which is a good sixty pounds lighter than he was usually announced at. Terry Daniels was Sarge's flag bearer for this match, and I think Joe got his weight and Sarge's mixed up, Such a mistake would never be broadcast in this day and age.

3. Sarge takes initial control, but Charlie tries to turn the bout into a slugfest. His punches back Sarge up a few steps, but he goes down after only one punch.

4. Howard's voiceover plugs both WWF Magazine and All-Star, which aired Saturdays at 10AM on WOR-TV (Channel 9) in New York. By the time I started following wrestling in real time in the summer of 1986, it had moved to 11AM.

5, Sarge kicks Charlie in the ribs, then hits a stomach breaker for a one-count, He goes to an armbar briefly, but Charlie rakes the eyes. then rams Sarge's head into the top turnbuckle twice.

The fans begin a "USA!" chant, which snaps Sarge back to life. Fulton is rocked by a series of right hands, then Sarge hits a short-arm Slaughter Cannon. Charlie gets to his feet, but Sarge is ready with the cobra clutch, and the lights go out at 2:02.

6, Mean Gene said on commentary that Sarge began the match with his whistle still around his neck, so I went back and looked at the tape again.

Not only did he still wear it in the opening seconds of the match, but it looked like he hit Fulton with it (grabbing Charlie in a headlock so the referee couldn't see) before dropping it to the mat, where the ring attendant was able to pick it up and get it out of harm's way.

7, Vince the announcer really likes Sarge; he's more animated than he is in most other matches at this time, and you even hear a bit of the laugh that he made so infamous later on.

Next: To be determined.

Thoughts?

Yeah, he liked Sarge so much he fired him a few months later for signing the GI Joe deal with Hasbro and screwing up his own toy deal.

That's Vince the owner, Ghost. Vince the ruthless business owner and Vince the preppy, geeky announcer are two completely different people who happened to share the same body.

The more I learn about Vince the owner, the more impressed I am with his ability to play the announcer role. It's not easy for a non-professional to go on camera and pretend to be someone so different from their true selves, but between his Cosell-clone stage and his preppy stage, Vince did it for twenty-five years.

Now for some tag team action, as Rene teams up with Lanny Kean (the future Cousin Junior) to have a go at The Wild Samoans:

1. This match was taped June 19, 1984 in Allentown. It was the opening match of the final edition of Championship ever to originate from Allentown on Black Saturday weekend (July 14, 1984).

2. There isn't much difference at all between Lanny Kean and Cousin Junior. The real Lanny comes off as a bit arrogant, but that's expected from a heel. You can definitely tell that he and Junior were the same person.

Lanny's billed from Reno, Nevada. Assuming that's his real hometown, I wonder if he ever crossed paths with Jim Neidhart.

3. Afa and Sika are supposed to be the faces here, but I'd call the reception they got mixed at best. The fans may have cheered them when they had a chance to beat up Albano, but on their own they weren't exactly going to compete with Andre and Hogan for the fans' hearts.

4, It turns out I was wrong; the Samoans were still heels here, but Capper wasn't with them. I thought that they had turned face earlier in the year, around the time that Adonis and Murdoch won the belts.

By the way, did Capper ever do any interviews in which he said that he wanted to manage Adrian and Dickie? I read that in a book I had once, but I've never seen a clip of him actually offering his services to them. (They did team up against Sarge and the Samoans for a six-man at MSG in September of '84).

5. The match begins out of nowhere, as Sika attacks Rene from behind, then whips him to the buckle face first. A headbutt knocks him down, then Sika whips him into a chop by Afa, followed by another headbutt.

6. At that point, we see Capper for the first time. Rene takes advantage of the momentary distraction to knock Sika down, then tags Kean and holds Sika wide open for Lanny's elbow drop, That's all for Albano, who goes back to the locker room without so much as a backward glance,

Meanwhile, Sika wins a slugfest with Kean, then fires him in and backdrops him.

7. Afa tags in and drops Kean with a big headbutt. then thumbs him in the throat. Lanny staggers to the wrong corner and gets clobbered by Sika. Then it's back to Afa, who whips him in and almost takes his head off with a chop.

8. Gene speculates that Goulet's loading his glove in the corner. If he is, now would be a good time to use it. Meanwhile, Kean's getting beaten halfway to Hog Waller by Afa and Sika. At one point, Sika tries to bait Goulet into joining the party, but Rene discreetly backs away.

9. Lanny finally gets close enough to tag, but Rene short-arms him blatantly enough that Vince and Gene notice. Fortunately for Lanny, Afa and Sika have proven their point, and Sika finishes him off with the Samoan Drop at 3:40.

Vince is trying to sell Afa and Sika as faces, saying how appreciative the fans are of their effort, but I'm still hearing loud boos as the tape cuts out.

10. This tape is from the Boston area. Howard's voiceover mentions a card at the Joe Tully Forum in Billerica, Massachusetts on Wednesday, July 25.

There was no attendance given, but the main event was Sarge/Sheik, with Sarge winning by pinfall. Also, Tito defended the Intercontinental title against Paul Orndorff and won by disqualification.

The other matches:

Fred Marzino and Pete Doherty went to a draw

In a midgets match, Dana Carpenter beat the Haiti Kid

Tiger Chung Lee beat Jose Luis Rivera

Next: To be determined,

Now for some tag team action, as Charlie teams with Tony Russo against a team that I can honestly say I've never seen before: The Invaders.

1. This match was taped Tuesday, March 6, 1984 in Allentown and was aired on Championship the weekend of March 17, 1984.

2. Do we know who the Invaders were?

3; Russo gets the early advantage with a wristlock, Invader 1 (as I'll call him) kips up twice, then hits what I guess you'd call a spinning armdrag to get Russo down,

Russo gets the advantage and pushes 1 back to the ropes, but 1 shoots him off. Russo takes him down with a sunset flip, then a headscissors. Invader does a cartwheel, hits a slam, then tags out.

4. Invader 2 tags in and snap mares Russo over. Russo gets to his corner and tags Fulton.

Meanwhile, Howard's vouceover promotes a meet-and-greet with Sarge in the Boston area that afternoon (March 17) at which he'll sign copies of the then-current issue of WWF Magazine.

5. Fulton tags in and takes over on 2 with a knee to the midsection and a right hand, He grabs a side headlock, but 2 shoots him off, drops down, leapfrogs, then hits a monkey flip.

6. After another tie-up, Russo tags back in and hits a kick to the ribs, then whips 2 to the opposite cornet. 2 catches him with a boot coming in. snaps Russo over, then hits a shot to the chest, Russo tags Fulton.

So far, there's nothing to make these guys stand out. They're more gymnastic than most of the other babyface teams we've seen, but I'd put them solidly behind the Bulldogs, the Bees, Atlas and Johnson, the Rougeaus, and Windham and Rotundo in my ranking of full-time face teams in this project. That's pretty near the bottom. (The list is in no particular order.)

7. The Invader Vince calls Number 1 snaps Fulton over, and they exchange chops. 1 gets behind Fulton and takes him down backslide-style, with his shoulders flat on the mat.

Without even an attempt at a tag, 2 comes off the top rope with a front flip that supposedly knocks enough wind out of Charlie for the masked men to get the three-count at 2:16. Note my use of the word "supposedly"; 2 didn't look like he came off with enough impact to break an egg.

Vince calls them out for their "rule-bending" (more like rule-shattering) after the pinfall. He also sounds slightly surprised that the decision's allowed to stand, which is quite a change from the later Vince for whom faces could do no wrong whatsoever.

Next: To be determined.

Thoughts?

The Invaders were

 #1 Jose Gonzalez

 #2 Roberto Soto

 #3 Johnny Rivera

All of whom had previously worked as mid-care ethnic babyfaces in the WWF years prior.

I loved the Invaders as a kid. Their style was fast paced, gymnastic and exciting.

I am with you, Dan Shocket's Ghost. The Invaders from early June 1983 - early April 1984 were one of the best tag teams in the WWF. I thought in the fall of 1983 that they could possibly beat the Samoans. As a kid, I loved the Invaders. They were very athletic and had great moves.
