Bob did work as a security guard at a dog racing track in the early 2000s. I asked Harley about it at an Indy show in Seagrove, NC years ago and Harley told me "He needs that job like he needs a hole in the head!"

Bad News Brown said in his RF shoot that he worked as a mall security guard. That made me sad. Thinking someone who won a Bronze in the Olympics (or maybe it was Pan Ams, but I think it was Olympics) and was such a great worker relegated to such an unskilled, low paying job...he deserved better.

I hate sports entertainment but I love wrestling. Hence, I don't watch the business any more. :(

I envy those who lived in a territory. I grew up in Tucson, AZ. My "territory" was being a WWF "C" town.

I believe the business fell on its ass in the early 90's because WCW started to copy WWF when it really should have been the other way around.

He won a Bronze medal in judo in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. Did not start wrestling until 1977 when he was 34 years old. Great success in the 80s in Stampede and WWF.

He did work as a mall security guard in Alberta, Canada in late 90s.

Is mall security "unskilled"? Seems to me quite a number of skills would be required for that.

He also worked hanging drywall, according to the Hogan cover Sports Illustrated. This would have been a year or two after his title reign.

I work at a home depot and I don't even like to think of lifting drywall.

Do you guys have a picture of Gary Lindgren in the drywall section of the store or a picture of Jim Duggan in the lumber department?

Backlund kept himself in extraordinary physical condition during his abscence from wrestling from mid August 1985 - early July 1992.

He had to get up early for his job for 7 years. It was a job that required incredible stamina, physical strength, mental tenacity, etc

Awesome that Nikolai would help people avoid fines

I He wasn't this cheap guy some fans think he is. He liked to save money, like it was a hobby of his

Considering how most of the boys ended up when their careers were over, I don't think this is a negative trait at all. Quite the contrary. I don't know the guy, but given that he came from Eastern Europe he probably knew hardship well and didn't really want to repeat it in his golden years. I think he was a role model that the boys should've followed.

Good point, Bret. Lots of boys in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s were raised in very low socio-economic households. They earned a lot of money over a short period of time and spent the money they earned in their 20s and 30s and realized that they had many years ahead of them but did not know what to do career wise.

If any of these current sports pro athletes blow their money they are idiots as they can make more money in a few months than I will in a lifetime.

For retired wrestlers, there's more to it than just being spendthrift--there's no insurance or pensions in wrestling and medical bills for an ex-wrestler can pile up real fast.

Hard times can hit athletes even if they're not spending money on Ferraris and gold-plated faucets. "Helpers" and even family members can embezzle/lose their money for them (see the NHL's Jack Johnson whose own parents defrauded him of millions).

Danny White is about as whitebread as athletes get and he had financial problems in retirement.

As for Nikolai...how much of that 1994 WWF run was shoot vs. work? They sure spent a lot of time harping on how broke he was through bad investments, for no discernible purpose other than to basically embarrass him.
