Was that a misprint on your part Stephen about Savage breaking into wrestling in 1980? Thought he started out back in 1973, working during the baseball off season. I remember Bob Luce pointing out that Randy Poffo was shooting photos from ringside at Comiskey Park for an AWA show in I believe Sept.1974.

To try and answer the original question.  I'm sure the elder Vince McMahon knew of Angelo Poffo and was likely aware that his son Randy was breaking into wrestling in 1980.
The WWF of that era liked to bring in established stars especially as challengers to the Champion.  Now Bruno was different.  He found his own opponents oftentimes.  Bobby Duncum was one he brought in.  Stan Hansen came in at the suggestion of his friend Mike Padiusius.  Ken Patera called Bruno personally and lobbied for a chance to be his opponent and they worked him in too.
Most of Backlund's challengers had been stars or had runs elsewhere.  Hogan hadn't had a lot of experience before his NY run but his look, made him a worthwhile .."Let's give him a try" kind of guy.  Slaughter had a run in the AWA as Super Destroyer Mark II but took the Sgt. Slaughter gimmick and ran with it.
Randy Savage was smaller and unproven and was truly ready by the time 1985 came and he continued to evolve and was the true total package for the WWF during the 2nd half of the 1980's.

Yep I agree!   In 1985, Savage was in my book the best total package in wrestling.  Right with Flair.   And Savage had the new age high flying that was popping up in his arsenal as well.   WAY AHEAD of his time.  I'm not sure Vince knew HOW GREAT Savage actually was upon signing.   BUT it didn't take long to tell Savage from a total package standpoint was a great balance to all charismatic brawling or big guys he had on the roster.

But the AWA SHOULD HAVE got in on Savage before he ever got to Vince.  He was in Memphis before going to the WWF.  Verne should have viewed Memphis as a great resource when getting new main event stars on his AWA TV.   With Hogan and Flair as the other two World Champs.

Savage would have been AWESOME as the AWA World Champion!   Verne had the Road Warriors as his tag champs.  Which gave him the most charismatic team in wrestling.  With Savage as AWA World Champ, it would have given him a top two total package in wrestling.

Instead of the PWUSA mess, AWA and Memphis should have made their bond stronger in the mid 80's.  INSTEAD of later in the decade like they eventually did.  When it was more OUT OF DESPERATION on the AWA's part!

At least Jarrett recommended the Fabulous Ones and of course Mike Shields to Verne in 1984. ZZ Top Music Videos galore on AWA TV. Might have to give Jimmy Hart credit on that.

I had always heard that Vince knew very little about the competition's talent. Remember the which one is Ricky and which one is Robert question?

I got to agree with a previous poster who said that nobody actually believed in an Outlaw promotion were literally criminals, it was just jargon  and an expression

Most don't even know what an "outlaw" is. All it means is that the government has made it legal to kill them. That's it.

As far as what those in the business of professional wrestling considered an Outlaw promotion and how they defined it...., by definition, the WWF would have been considered an outlaw promotion during the expansion period

Indeed they were an outlaw promotion in many different territories

There were other Outlaw promotions that did this as well. In fact there was a recent discussion regarding Al Patterson's Outlaw promotion in the late seventies running in the established AWA territory using people like Blackie Guzman and Angel rivera. An outlaw promotion was a promotion that ran in the established territory, regardless of who they used as wrestlers or how big they were

VKM like his father relied upon other promotions to develop talent and then they came in and got that talent from mid 50s to late 80s

I would well imagine that Vince was way to busy running the WWF to pay attention to any other promotion or their talent. I would imagine that that duty fell to Vince's right hand men like Pat Patterson & Bruce Prichard.

Dan Shocket's Ghost, you are correct. VKM relied upon Bruce Pritchard, Pat Patterson, Howard Finkel, Terry Garvin and others to refer talent to him in the mid and late 1980s.

I would have to agree.  Not many people knew much about Poffo's ICW to begin with.  Unless you lived in the territory, you probably didn't know much about it.  It was kind of like Southeastern.  I don't think Poffo's ICW had much magazine coverage either.  It had to be one of the smallest promotions in the country, yet it did cover a decent amount of geographic territory, all things considered.
