What wrestlers did Slick manage while he was in the Central States area??  Did he jump from Central States right to the WWF? And what year was that?  Thanks!
OneFanGang - January 29th, 2006 16:47 GMT

Slick was in the Central States area in 1986, just prior to leaving for the WWF.  As you might recall he got the rub from Fred Blassie by co-managing his stable of WWF guys like Volkoff, Hercules, Iron Sheik etc. and eventually inherited the full load once he was established there.

As for CS guys, Slick had a number of charges while there including Butch Reed, Bulldog Bob Brown, and the Success Express, which was comprised of Hangman Bobby Jaggers and KM favorite Ed "Moondog" Moretti.

Thanks OFG!

Can't forget Diamond Timothy Flowers and Art Crews. Couple of boys that also worked the Pacific Northwest.

I also read that Slick had managed one of the Lord Humongouses in San Antonio.

I had thought that this was in between his Central States and WWF jobs, but I could be wrong on that.

I thought I read where he started in San Antonio, then went to KC.  Slick was really good and in a way kind of ahead of his time.  One funny memory - towards the end of his KC run, he was avoiding Bruiser Brody on TV.  They were both standing in the middle of the ring, and Slick was almost taller than Brody.

I liked his nickname " The Doctor Of Style"!  Was Harley Race responsible for bringing in Slick and Reed in 86?

Why has no one copied the name Success Express since? I think that's pretty clever.

Did anyone see the RF video shoot he did?  I heard he feel asleep a couple times during filming.

I saw it. I don't recall him falling asleep, but he was close. The interview was conducted at 3am or so.  Is their any video of him from when he was a wrestler?

Bump for the Slickster.
SportOfWrestling - January 24th, 2013 18:51 GMT

For the record, I'd bump for the Slickster

Interesting thread.

Did he go by the name Slick in CS?

Also I had always heard that he was Rufus R Jones son - any truth to that?

BLONDE ADONIS - January 25th, 2013 14:35 GMT

Wiki says Slick was Rufus' adopted son.
Tojo Mojo - January 26th, 2013 02:34 GMT

Never got the appeal of the guy. Felt that he was one of the weaker managers that I saw over the years.I saw a fair amount of his CS stuff on tape, & the guy just bored me. But,......
chrisstlouis - January 26th, 2013 15:59 GMT

Yes he was Slick in CS. And he called himself Slickster and spoke of Slickamania.
Strike N - January 27th, 2013 23:14 GMT

I agree totally. Slick never did it for me either.
midwestmark - May 06th, 2014 19:09 GMT

He was Slick in Central States.  Strangely enough when he went to Kansas City he didn't change name or gimmick.

I meant that when he left KC to go to WWF, he didn't really change anything.  CS was lucky to have him at the time.  Good talent.

He was the adopted son of Rufus R. Jones but did they ever acknowledge this on tv?  I don't think they wanted people to know Rufus was that old to have a grown son, adopted or otherwise

Btw, Slick ought to be in the WWE Hall of Fame.  It would be worth it to see him strut out to the stage to Jive Soul Bro

But like Bundy, he was a co-plaintiff in the concussion lawsuit against the WWE

Also, when he strutted out to "Jive Soul Bro" to "officiate" the "wedding" of Daniel Bryan and AJ Lee on Raw 1000, I marked out but the morons in the crowd were completely silent.

I do not think they were moronic as too young to remember. Those of us who remember The Slickster, are of a certain age... OLD!

Posting this again - Slick was in an angle way back in 72 with his dad.

http://percivalafriend.com/friend072307.htm

Rufus glanced over toward the front row where his family was sitting and saw something that took his eyes and concentration away from Harley and me. A huge man was seated next to his son (The Reverend Slick in later years) and Mrs. Jones. For some reason, Rufus knew that something was up and began to try and jump from the ring to get at this huge man with a beard and wearing a big hat and overcoat. Referee Richard Moody grabbed Rufus and told him he had to concentrate on what was going on in the ring.

Rufus kept trying to get out of the ring to get at this stranger but was restrained by both Moody and Race. I was inching towards the big guy seated at ringside when Rufus jumped out of the ring and grabbed me. I thought that I was a goner, but Harley had also jumped out of the ring and was beating the snot out of Rufus. Rufus turned the tables on us and regained his composure and was doing a good job of teaching Harley a lesson in humility when that huge guy seated at ringside grabbed the little guy and started towards me. Suddenly he pulled the big hat off and shed the big overcoat, and there was Angus Campbell, the man that made wrestling a household name in the Midwest .
