Torch Newsbreakers
March 1989
By Wade Keller, PWTorch editor
The man often called the greatest and most popular promoter of all-time, Paul Boesch, died on March 8 of a heart attack. He was 76 years old.
Paul Boesch was a promoter for Houston Wrestling for the past several decades. His association ranged from Southwest Promotions, Mid-South/UWF, and most recently a short stint with the WWF.
On August 28, 1987, Paul Boesch's farewell show drew a sell-out of 12,000 fans in Houston. Vince McMahon, Jr. and Verne Gagne were among the guests at the memorable event. He was one of the all-time most popular promoters among fellow promoters, wrestlers, and fans.
Boesch is probably best known for hosting television wrestling in Houston for nearly four decades. He also wrestled for over a decade in the 1930s and '40s and began headlining cards only three months into his career.
Boesch will be missed by all who knew him. Although wrestling is changing at a record pace, the standards he set as a promoter and his attitude toward the fans and wrestling should be followed for many years to come. Those who knew him best knew he was a man to be admired.

Great promoter. I know it probably sounds like BS, but he really did seem to care that the fans in Houston got a quality product most of the time. I know that he despised advertising a card and someone would no show on a given night. I think that irritated Boesch to no end. I'm not sure all promoters really gave a care as long as the tickets were paid for and people were in the seats.

Everything I've read about him says he was nothing less than a class act. When I was about 12 or 13, I would write letters to promoters that were part of the NWA. I received two responses back. One was from Bill Watts that was typed (probably by a secretary, but still nice to receive) but Paul Boesch actually hand wrote and signed a note back to me. Gave some great advice "stay in school, muscle and athletics soon fade, you need what you learn for your entire life." I still have that note to this day.
