Hello all,
I couldn't find a specific board for this topic so I figured this was the closest place to start. Any admin could move it if I missed the board completely.
Anyways I have been in contact with Johnny Powers myself and he told me that he was a 6 time IWA World Champion from 1976 through 1983. I was always under the impression that the IWA went under before this or in 76 but apparently it was still going on for many more years. I guess Mil Mascaras still claiming the IWA title was inaccurate (Powers said he kept the belt but was technically not still the champion).
I found a few matches from 1977 as well with Brower defending the North American title against The Magnificent Zulu and Powers and Nick DeCarlo facing The Cuban Assassins for the tag team titles. Based on some basic research and talking with Johnny Powers I've tried to reconstruct the title histories but he seems vague on who he won and lost the IWA titles to from 76-83 but said that his last title defense was against Bulldog Brower in Nigeria. The story according to him was that it was really hot and the crowd was really rowdy and the person who ran the building kept the doors locked to try and hold him up for more money and a riot broke out among the fans. He said the event disgusted him so much he decided to be done with wrestling from there.
Anyways here is a copy of my history, I sent it to Hisa of wrestling-titles.com as I've had what I've done so far backed up by Johnny Powers as being mostly correct (some of the dates are still up in the air) and hopefully Johnny and I can sit down and really work on getting this stuff specified. He lives about 20 minutes from me on the other side of the border so its just a matter of syncing up.
IWA World Tag Team Championships
The Mongols 02/75
*Titles are held up after a TV match against Dino Bravo and Gino Brito.(most likely early 04/75) IWA announces over the next few weeks it will watch every IWA team closely and chose the top two contenders to face for the tag titles.
The Mongols[2] 04/21/75
*Defeat Thunderbolt Patterson and Ernie Ladd, the Soul Patrol.
Johnny Powers & Nelson Royal 9/75
*Possibly chose Pez Whatley to replace Johnny Powers in 2/76 or 3/76
Kurt Von Hess & Kurt Von Stroheim 3/76
Bulldog Brower & The Mighty Igor 7/76 or 8/76
The Tyler Brothers (Rip and Buzz) 7/76 or 8/76
Johnny Powers and Nick Decarlo 2/77 or 3/77
*Winston-Salem, NC: Johnny Powers and Nick DeCarlo© wrestle the Cuban Assassins on 04/30/77 to a double countout. Still champions as of 05/27/77.
IWA North American Heavyweight Championship
Ox Baker 02/75
*Announced on Arrival
Bulldog Brower 07/75
*Awarded or possibly beats Mighty Igor or Johnny Powers when Baker leaves the company.
[…]
Bulldog Brower retains the North American Championship in a match against Magnificent Zulu on 04/30/77. Still champion as of 05/27/77
IWA Brass Knuckles Championship
Don "The Fonz" Fargo credited as being Brass Knuckles Champion in 4/77
There are a few other titles like the JR. Heavyweight Championship and North American Women's Championship but I can only find one listing of each so I am not sure if they were legitimate titles or if they were just given to people coming into the company.
Thanks everyone for the help!

Great work , I love the history of the different "leagues" of wrestling.
i was so excited when the IWA was included in the Ratings section of the mags Wrestler and Inside Wrestling. it was very thrilling to see the different guys listed of course it had to have been a boost to JP's promotions as it wooould have brought the IWA upstream as opposed to . I'm sure there is a lot more research to do with details on the title holders. There is enough info out there to help if you can find it. Try the Steel belt site it has soome great IWA stuff on it, and there is lots of IWa stuff buried in this MB also. good llllluck.

Steel Belt was my first line of research before going elsewhere. They have a lot of posters and programs that show who the champions might be but not always who they defeated or when. For instance they have a poster of an IWA event that listed Powers and Royal as Tag Champions and then show Pistol Pez as a tag champion with Royal. Not sure if there was a title holder in between those two or if Powers simply gave up his half and Royal picked Pez. Powers seems to remember that he gave up his half so he could go back to concentrating on the North American Title and Brower but he couldn't give any specifics so he isn't even sure.
Steel Belt is a great starter but IWA was and still to this day is its own enigma in wrestling history.

Great post. As a kid-9 or 10 years old,I would bust my kiester(butt) to get my paper route done so I could see Buffalo TV.Johnny Powers and company. In the mid 70's,I was living in Florida, and IWA was on TV at midnight. It was almost the same-Jack Reynolds and Ron Martinez on the microphones.Still have a few VHS tapes of IWA buried in the basement.

Is it true that IWA had better tv station Channel 9 in New York than Was IWA really a threat to both WWWF & the NWA? Many people say that the NWA used certain "tactics" to discourage talent from working there. They were the first promotion with National syndicated tv before any other promotion in the mid-seventies? Wasn't there a revival in the 1980's with 1970's s shows used to promote card in the Carolinas?

Great work so far and tanks Oldschooldrew! Posts and info like this are precisely why I love this board! Kayfabe Memories indeed! Another member has been requesting a separate territory topic for IWA for quite some time.
Johnny Powers was a favorite of mine and I was lucky to see some NWF shows in Akron. The IWA featured many of the stars from there and Detroit. There also seems to be quite a bit of footage surviving...
Im sure none of this is really news to the regulars on the board but I just wanted to say nice work and hopefully encourage more posts on this topic.

Thanks for the kind words. The IWA has always intrigued me and I always found it amazing that it still seems to be such a mystery wrapped up behind it despite all the new researching methods and internet.
Trying to at least shed some light on the full history of the IWA as it is pretty evident that it did not go away after Einhorn pulled out as most history websites lead us to believe. Now its hard because Johnny Powers hasn't been in the best of health these past few years and still tries to work a full time schedule promoting MMA and other business ventures. I still hope I will be able to meet up with him soon to try and fill in all the gaps that he couldn't remember via e-mails and phone calls.

Tex McKenzie was awful in the ring. Big, tall guy--but, clumsy as heck --almost laughable, sad to say.

Oh, yeah, PS, if you look through the results archives & my results research, the champions are usually listed on the cards.
Mighty Igor is listed as Eastern States champion on many cards
Johnny Powers is listed as Canadian champion on many cards
Nick DeCarlo is listed as Brass Knuckles champion, & Sonny King & Butcher Brannigan are listed on one card as wrestling for the title [not sure who the champ was]
Phil Watson & "Beau Goose" Martinez [Luis?] are listed as wrestling each other for the Junior championship

For the 9/20 card in St. Pauls NC, there is a tag team title match between Johnny Powers & Bulldog Brower [presumably champs] vs Hartford Love & Dizzy McShane

This is one of the news programs that Johnny Powers appeared on to talk about the IWA versus Mid-Atlantic. The interview was on WXII channel 12's "Midmorning News" from Winston-Salem,NC on Tuesday Feb.10,1976. This was about two weeks after the lawsuit against Jim Crockett Promotions was filed.

This is from an article advertising an IWA card in Wadesboro,NC on Feb.5,1977:
"Headling the card in the main event will be the "Battle for the Brass Knuckes Championship" as the current titleholder,Nick DeCarlo defends against "Fonzo" Fargo."
No idea who Nick DeCarlo won the trophy from.
