Was the Sheik the first wrestler to throw fire? Did he originate the gimmick?

I asked that question a few years back ... someone said Saul Weingeroff MAY have used fire earlier

That was my thought as well as I know that "Gentlemen" Saul was doing it as well in the same era.

The first time I had seen it was with J.C. Dykes and the Masked Infernos in Georgia in the '60s.

We had a great thread about this topic a few years ago. Even if he wasn't the originator, The Sheik burnt more people than anyone else. And when he burned you, you stayed burnt!

How would you have liked to have been the opponent when the first person had the idea of the fire gimmick? "So I'll throw a big ball of fire at your face...."

That's funny.

The Sheik was the first person I saw throw fire and I thought it was cool then and I still think it's cool now. I think what remains so appealing about throwing fire is that it is not over done. Only certain guys do it but not all the time.

And selling it is so easy, and so believable. There is no way to oversell having a ball of fire thrown at your face. Has anyone, anywhere, ever no-sold a fireball?

Lawler got to the point where he threw the fire also.

However, seems like there was an art to throwing fire and the Sheik was the best at it.  He made it look natural, almost a surprise it was coming.  Other guys, including Lawler, you could tell he was using the lighter.

There were times you could see Sheik using a lighter

Not a fan of it, but even less so of the infatuation Memphis had with it for a while.  Not only Lawler but Eddie Gilbert too, and it was never quite like "Gilbert threw a fireball!!!" but rather "Gilbert turned around and fiddled getting flashpaper out of his trunks, he's flicking a lighter on the flashpaper...and now he's thrown the flashpaper in Lawlet's vicinity!!"

I agree. I loved throwing fire. What was so cool about it was that it was always played as some kind of mysterious secret art that only a small handful of guys knew.

Legend has it it was Wilbur Snyder in Cincy circa 1960. May not be true, but that was a story I once heard or read.

Wow, if that's true, what an odd legend....the least gimmicky of all wrestlers, Wilbur Snyder, "The World's Most Scientific Wrestler".
