Read somewhere a few years back where the promoters really wanted to get the Missouri Belt off Dick Slater. Why was he given it? How did he lose stock with the promoters?

Not sure what promoters you speak of, unless you mean O'Connor. Muchnick is the only name here. He got the belt because he was a rising star in the biz. When he didnt make time to work shows here, the belt was taken off him.

Regarding the sub-topic line of "short term champ" , it seems like an average run with the Missouri belt was about 6-8 months in the late 70s, Slater included if Aug '77-Feb '78 is accurate info for his tenure.

I know 6 months was a good run with the belt. Just curious of the politics of the time. Did Slater work St Louis much afterwards?

Eddie Graham and Jack Brisco were both high on Slater and pushed Sam to use him but Dick was not too keen to give up Friday night main events in Georgia and/or Florida to come to St. Louis. Giving him the Missouri title on his debut was part of the incentive to get him to appear. And then he made little effort to clear dates for Sam. He did not come back for almost three months for his first defense, and appeared on only three of nine Kiel shows in six months. Finally Sam just decided to pull the belt off him and send him packing, which apparently suited Dick just fine.

Did he no show? Remember reading the office was glad he showed and dropped the belt. Like they where worried he would keep the belt.

The Missouri belt stayed in the St. Louis office; it was collected after shows for safe keeping to avoid any such shenanigans during Muchnick's run of things. Larry Matysik has a story of the belt being left at the office once, and having to rush back over several blocks away to get the belt by showtime.

Looks like Slater dropped the title on TV. Can't find results for 2/12/78 at the Kiel.

Indeed it was a televised title switch, as was the next changeover to Dick Murdoch. Out of the files of Matysik's "From the Golden Era":
Feb. 11, 1978 – WatC
Tom Andrews beat David Nevin
Ted DiBiase won the Missouri State Championship by beating Dick Slater
Rocky Johnson won a handicap tag bout from Oki Shikina and Barry Sharp by beating
Shikina
Terry Sawyer beat Roger Howell
Feb. 18, 1978 – Kiel (att. 10,052)
*NWA Champion Harley Race draw Rocky Johnson with neither man able to score a fall
within the one-hour limit
Ric Flair, Chuck O’Connor and Bulldog Bob Brown won from Greg Gagne, Ron Fuller
and Pat O’Connor when Flair beat Fuller
Missouri Champion Ted DiBiase draw Dick Murdoch
Tom Andrews beat Bob Geigel (sub for Dick Slater) by DQ
David Von Erich beat Seki
Evan Johnson beat Bennie Ramirez
Feb. 25, 1978 – WatC
David Von Erich beat Bennie Ramirez
Dick Murdoch won the Missouri State Championship by beating Ted DiBiase
Ric Flair beat Mike Pappas
Scott Casey draw Alexi Smirnoff

According to the results page he was booked for a couple of shows after the title switch and they had to have a sub for him. The belt changed hands on TV more than a few times.
