Recently in the Hodge Podge board we had a thread about bad forgotten gimmicks and Hector Guerrerro as Lasertron was brought up. However, I kinda liked the Lasertron gimmick andwas just curious as to if he was over with the fans at the time or not. Your thoughts?

Seemed to be a mild reception. It was a cool outfit. That gimmick would've been a good fit for the WWF or Mexico. In JCP, it seemed out of place.

I was roughly 10-years-old and a big fan of Jim Crockett Promotions when Lazertron worked in the territory. Even as a young viewer, I wasn't terribly enamored with him. As The Avenger notes, Lazertron didn't gel with what the NWA did.
Come to think of it, Lazertron may have been one of the earliest incidents of the NWA trying to outdo the WWF with silly gimmicks.

I thought he was mildly over. The people didn’t mind. It did seem out of place but he was cool. It was his wrestling ability that got him over, though, as opposed to the gimmick.

I agree that LazorTron seems much more like a gimmick for the cartoonish WWF then the more serious minded NWA, but i found his matches exciting with all the fast paced, high flying moves. I had no idea it was Hector Guerrerro behind the mask. Word is Dusty was inspired to create the character as a result of the success the game Lazer tag was having at the time.

The Lazertron gimmick may have been more successful if JCP had an actual junior heavyweight division that consisted of more than Denny Brown.

Lazerton had a brief run in JCP from early March 1987 - early October 1987
My memories of him include watching him in singles and tag team matches on Saturday nights on TBS, teaming with Jimmy Valiant a lot, and winning the NWA Jr Heavyweight (or lightweight) title.

The Jr Heavyweight Championship at that time was very minor. For example, Denny Brown was the champ. The only place I thought he was over was in the WTBS studios and the kids screaming. I respect Hector Guerrero a lot, but this was no high point for him. He has no ego. I once asked him why he didn't go out to Vegas for CAC he responded "that's for legends not me" I said you're a legend. He said that's just your opinon. He was laughing when he said it but it made me kind of sad he felt that way about himself

The Guerrero's are one of the most legendary families in wrestling, Hector is a legend just by being a member.
