I was as big a fan of the NWA you'd find at age 12 in 1988 and a fan of the Raiders (the team star Lyle Alzado made his name with), but oddly enough, I never made an effort to watch Learning the Ropes.
I vividly recall being wildly disappointed with the NWA for taking part in something as trivial as a sitcom. An announcement was made regarding the project and a trailer was shown at Clash of Champions 2, Miami Mayhem. I was stunned to see the NWA, where "We Wrestle," going along with this silliness. What really floored me was seeing no less heels than Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson going along with this, considering they were booked as the villains in the night's main event.
One's mind makes the connection that if these guys can fake these holds and moves and personas to make a TV show, why should I believe any of this is real?!
This feels like an over-reaction to 45-year-old me, but I couldn't have felt more strongly about it than I did that night.

Think NWA was trying to get mainstream exposure and mimic WWF

That's not what the majority of the NWA's fanbase wanted, and Jim Crockett was never going to out-McMahon the WWF.

I never watched it back then but I did watch the pilot, and also season 1 episode 1 on YouTube... and I am sorry but I thought the show was really really bad. The humor was really lame, in the pilot they know their dad is a wrestler and he's very open about it but then in season 1 they don't... always thought Pilots were supposed to sort of be the very very beginning but I guess there can be exceptions
As an example of how bad it was, in season 1 episode 1 Ric Flair is doing a promo and its really really really bad. He sort of does his same voice and everything but what he says is like something 6th graders on a playground would come up with. How in the world the producers thought that this Ric Flair would be more entertaining and connect with the audience more than the actual Ric Flair is beyond me. I realize on a sitcom like that he couldn't do his whole womanizing PG-13 rated stuff, but he could definitely have been closer to his real self
It just seemed like every line was done just to get a laugh..no matter how lame the line is.. and I realize that's sort of what sitcoms are, but sometimes it's out of place ...
I hate it when people nitpick shows that are just supposed to be fun and for a laugh so I hope I'm not coming across that way, but these things really really stood out
From what I saw kayfabe wasn't seriously breached in the show, although they did sort of walk a line. Even when his kids were horrified and said I can't believe you maul people every night.., he never came out and said oh it's not real or anything .. and even though there were comments about watching wrestling and wrestling fans and lack of brain cells, none of the critics actually came out and said it wasn't real, at least not in the pilot or first episode.
For those that watched the full season, did they ever come out and address the real versus fake issue?

It was one of those shows that I didn't take overly serious. I knew it wasn't representative of reality. I saw it as farcical entertainment. Kind of like Three's Company.

Jim Cornette doesn't remember appearing on it lol and someone said in the you tube comments that Ricky Morton appeared on a episode playing a guitar.
