Jason, did your dad see great potential in Al Perez? The reason I ask is because I'm inclined to think that, had Al kept his mouth shut and went along with the program, Al would've been the heir apparent to the NWA/WCW World title as Ricky was to Harley Race a decade earlier.

If you feel hurting someone legit is the name of the game in pro wrestling then you'd fit right in with a certain bald-headed born-again-believing cowboy down south who'd be more than happy to sign you up

Al was one of my favorite guys to work with.  He had the look of a great babyface, but the intensity of a great heel. Either way, fans loved him.  If anyone in the business had the total package, it was Al.  He didn't talk a lot, but he did effective, straight to the point type interviews and he always appeared to be all business in the ring. Although, I can tell you from first hand experience that he was as relaxed and smooth as anybody I ever worked with and was always making little funny remarks that kept things loose.  Plus, he was just a great guy in the locker room.

In Gary's book he called Al "The most gorgeous creature to ever step into the ring" or something to that effect.  I think Gary was talking about both the look and the smoothness of his style.  He was a special talent who, had some things gone a bit differently and the timing right, could have been a major factor in the wrestling business at the highest level.

Perez was fine in the ring but the charisma just wasn't there.

Wasn't there? He was a total swarmy jerk. Perfect better than you heel type persona. Not to mention back then Mr. Hart could have enhanced any of Perez's perceived short-comings.

That was enough to get by as top dog in WCCW in 1987 or 88.  Not in the NWA.  Even with a mouthpiece, Perez was a little bland.  As a mid-card heel in the NWA, that's fine. However, he was never gonna be a main-eventer there.  And the idea of Perez as NWA World Champ is almost laughable.

Ok wow is all I can say to each their own but imo Perez reaked of having the "it" factor. He should have listened or let Hart handle the political waters and he would have been fine. Lets not forget if the heel deal did not get over he had the classic good looks and body that could have easliy allowed him to switch to face and maybe fill the Magnum void as well.

Then why didn't he get over?  He was given every opportunity in the NWA and it didn't happen.

Really? Opportunities yes but lots of them or a big push I think not and lets not forget that some of the folks he could have, should have and in some peoples opinion was going to replace/take their spot did not make that possible.

Sorry did not know this was an English class. Then again maybe I took 1 to many pucks to the dome. I will use them for you SO you don't have trouble following my thoughts.

I would say for one Flair certainly did not help his cause. I am sure Nikita had his say as well.

If singles was not in the cards then a tag team of he and Larry could have worked out well.

But every one has an opinion and mine and yours are miles apart. Oh well life goes on.

Laughable? I don't think so.
