What are all the territories that at one time or another recognized the AWA Champion as the "real" World Champion?
And which territories did the AWA Champion defend his Championship in?

Thanks

Memphis recognized both the AWA & NWA Champs. But the AWA Champ, specifically Bockwinkle, drew better than the NWA Champ. The fans believed that the AWA Champ was the real World Champion. When Jerry Lawler was the AWA World Champion he was viewed higher than Flair or Hogan by the Memphis fans. Although it hurt Lawler that he didn't win the title from Bockwinkle.

In Memphis, the tag titles were sometimes identified as the AWA Southern tag titles.

I would presume that the Duseks' territory in Iowa/Nebraska/Illinois/Quad Cities recognized the AWA champ as well, at least by the early 1960's.

Crockett didn't necessarily say the AWA champion was the "real world" champion, but Bockwinkel defended the title in Mid Atlantic several times in 1979.  I saw one match between the two on my 21st birthday (9/2/79) in Columbia SC.

And also had a few "Omaha only" title switches in the 60's

Verne Gagne [3] 1962-08-21 Minneapolis, MN
Also wins Omaha version from Fritz Von Erich on 63-08-25 in Omaha, NE.

Mighty Igor Vodic 1965-05-15 Omaha, NE
Local recognition only.
Mad Dog Vachon [2] 1965-05-22 Omaha, NE
Local recognition only.

Dick the Bruiser 1966-11-12 Omaha, NE
Local recognition only.
Mad Dog Vachon [4] 1966-11-19 Omaha, NE
Local recognition only.

For a time the AWA Championship was recognized and defended in Houston, Mississippi, St. Louis, Hawaii, Montreal. All Japan. Probably a location or 2 that I forgot.

It was recognized and defended in Toronto in the late 70's and Montreal in the mid-80's.

Bockwinkel defended in San Antonio and Calgary

Martel defended it in Nova Scotia

Hennig defended in Portland

Lawler in Dallas.

Joe Blanchard's Southwest Championship Wrestling recognized the AWA World title, at least until they crowned their own (short lived) World champion.

Verne defended in Florida and in the Central States territory. Nick wrestled in Stampede which I think were title defenses. Both wrestled in Germany but no title on the line.

Bockwinkel owned about 11% of Houston somewhere in the late 70s.

Toronto was an NWA town so it was called the 'AWA Championship', we also had the 'WWWF/WWF Title.' Only the NWA title was called 'World Title.'
